Do small recognitions make a big difference? I recently participated in a swimming competition in my residential society and won a gold medal. Even though it was just an internal competition, winning a race felt amazing. But the best feeling was being acknowledged for my effort. It was a small event but the joy of being recognised was child-like. Similarly, don’t we like it when we get appreciated by our managers, leaders, and team members for our work? We do, right? Then why is it we don’t appreciate them enough? For the work that we do in healthcare, there is no room for error. I was good at identifying the gaps or errors, and that’s what I did. I was a miser when it came to delivering an appreciation or recognising someone’s efforts. It took me several years before understanding the importance of appreciating someone and recognising their efforts. I don’t want you to make the same mistakes I made, and hence it is important to know - ↳ Acknowledgement plays a big role in motivating team members. ↳ Appreciate their efforts because they have given their best. ↳ Appreciating in public in front of others is a great way to build positivity all around. ↳ Find small ways to show your generosity and kindness. ↳ Have light-hearted conversations with the team. ↳ Give them a ‘Pat on the back’ when you can. Every human emotion is linked to feeling good about themselves and if they have done a great job, don’t hold back. Show it. Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re gonna get🍫🍩🍪 For me joining a new team is always exciting and a bit confusing at the same time. Each team has its own subculture, and every person has a unique style of communication. Therefore adjusting and blending in could be quite the challenge sometimes 😁 What helps me adjust to team dynamics is understanding that our differences make our collaboration even more valuable. It’s a great opportunity to learn new skills and share my experiences & expertise. Embracing these differences not only fosters a more inclusive and innovative environment but also strengthens our collective ability to achieve our team & personal professional goals. The lessons and skills I learn along the way, and the people I get to know, make it all well worth it.
