Last week we had a chance to join fellow CoLabber Center for Public Health and Development at the Kenya Paediatric Association Annual Scientific Conference. Insightful conversations with clinicians enabled us to understand much more deeply the potential that Oxygen-as-a-Service (O2aaS) has in addressing the oxygen supply challenges faced by lower-level healthcare facilities in Kenya. Among the many insights we gleaned from facilitating a conversation with this group are: 📦 For O2aaS to be successful, the holistic patient oxygen delivery package must be considered. For example, the right size and type of pulse oximeter is just as important as the concentrator. 📜 Given the familiarity of healthcare workers and patients with cylinders and piped oxygen, the time required for adaptation and training on new oxygen technology is a crucial consideration for O2aaS introduction. 📈 A clear cost structure for O2aaS is essential, as healthcare facilities often base decisions on cost. A transparent cost comparison with current expenditures can facilitate faster decision-making. Convenings like these where we have the opportunity to listen to others and share the work and research of the CoLab are an honour as much as they are invaluable to our work. We look forward to more of these conversations as we deepen our work in Kenya. If you are someone working in #PublicHealthcare in Kenya, we would love to connect and hear from you. #oxygenequity #oxygencolab #oxygenconcentrators #medicaloxyen #KenyaPediatric2024 #AcceleratingtowardsUHC Kenya Medical Association Kenya Paediatric Research Consortium - Keprecon

New Original Research article in RRH: Towards the new primary care reform in Greece: a focus on patients’ expectations, views and perceptions from rural healthcare centres by Charikleia Vova-Chatzi, Emmanouil Symvoulakis, Christina Parpoula and Christos Lionis. https://lnkd.in/ddZcE9pX A severe economic crisis and recent global conditions, including the global COVID-19 pandemic, have highlighted the importance of the role of primary health care (PHC), especially in low and middle-income countries. Patient perception of quality of care is an essential component in evaluating health-care delivery. This Original Research article reports on data from PHC Centers in Greece before the last PHC reform, undertaken to offer baseline information about patient experience, support the decision-making processes taking place, and provide valuable input for future policy-making comparisons in Greece. #ruralhealth #greece #primaryhealthcare #primarycarereform #generalpractice University of Crete Panteion University of Social and Political Sciences Christos Lionis

Founder, Pharmacologist, Clinical Biochemist, Author, Health advocate and Former Governor of Abia state (2015 - 2023)
Still on the continuation of this series post on our efforts to reduce health problems in Abia State, I’d like to highlight the progress we made in improving healthcare, which has significantly increased life expectancy in the region. Under my administration, we built one of the finest hospitals in Southeast Nigeria, equipped with advanced medical technologies, including a state-of-the-art CT scanner focused on addressing kidney and heart issues. This investment ensures that our facilities can offer high-quality diagnostics and treatment, elevating patient care standards. Moreover, our initiative to construct a multi-specialist hospital aimed to provide comprehensive medical services, handling various medical cases and emergencies with efficiency. This facility will feature an upscale laboratory similar to the one in Isuikwuato Local Government, enhancing our diagnostic capabilities. Additionally, during my tenure as governor, we introduced four mobile hospitals, custom-made in Germany and configured in Turkey. These mobile units include a laboratory, an operating theater, and a mini hospital, all powered by solar energy with backup generators to ensure uninterrupted service. These mobile hospitals are equipped to handle a wide range of health emergencies, thus ensuring that medical care is accessible even in remote areas. Our strategy has also involved improving primary and secondary healthcare centers, as 70% of our population relies on primary healthcare. By establishing secondary healthcare centers and a multi-specialist hospital, we have addressed the needs of those with non-communicable diseases who require more specialized care. These efforts, among many others, have been instrumental in improving healthcare in Abia State. Our commitment to healthcare is driven by the belief that health is of paramount importance to both myself and the people of Abia State. Stay tuned for more updates on the measures we have implemented to enhance our healthcare system -Dr. Okezie Victor Ikpeazu
