Reflections from my internship with Keeley Construction Group
Today is the last day of my internship with Keeley Construction. I want to share some insights that would benefit anyone stepping into a new position. Some thoughts are my own, others I picked up from colleagues.
1. Ask many questions, but only after you have tried to solve the problem yourself. It is quicker to rely on those with more experience, but it is beneficial in the long run to go through the problem-solving process.
2. Ask for extra work. This is something I heard from Al Dreste this summer. It shows that you are committed and invested in your work.
3. Make connections, but not just within your department. It is valuable to know at least one person from each area your company. Try to make eye contact with people when you are walking around the office.
4. Take ownership of your work. Confidence and accountability in your work will go a long way.
5. Don’t expect to master the job on your first day. It takes time to truly understand a new position. Stay positive and keep at it.
I hope these insights are valuable in your career. I am grateful for my time at Keeley Companies and am excited for this next chapter.
Laying the foundation for a career in construction! As a former Balfour Beatty intern, Carolinas Buildings Project Manager Dimelina Mora recently discussed what sets our internship program apart. Throughout their time with us, interns have the opportunity to get a true look into what a career in construction really looks like - from fostering client relationships to meeting real-world deadlines. #internship#BuildingNewFutures#construction
We sat down with our intern, Camila Cortés, to get her take on what she’s been up to during her internship with our Northstar team.
Camila’s greatest lesson learned at Northstar: “The importance of effective communication, leadership, and organizational skills. Three words come to mind every time I describe what Northstar does; those three words, I believe, consolidate what a true project manager is. It was the moment when I had to do a public speaking workshop with Commercial Real Estate Success Training (CREST) Internship, and this grabber we had to create came to me. It gave me the idea of seeing Northstar like master Lego builders, arranging together every block to create a masterpiece. Nothing is better than having a job where interacting with people in the right way is the key to the project’s success.”
Regarding the skills she acquired, “I gained a deep understanding of the importance of the Owner’s Project Manager (OPM) role, which I was unfamiliar with in Colombia. The internship allowed me to truly appreciate the value of this role and be a part of it. Additionally, I gained insight into new construction methods and how projects are meticulously organized to increase efficiency and minimize errors throughout the construction process.”

Catamount’s internship programs have been educating and investing in the future of the construction industry for over 20 years.
We sat down recently with Catamount’s VP of People, Emily Livorsi, to chat about Catamount’s culture, what makes Catamount’s internship programs unique, and why she’s excited about the future of construction.

On 11th September 2024, I successfully completed my summer internship with #BrittainHadley. I would like to extend a special thanks to the incredible team at #BrittainHadley for their continuous support and guidance throughout the internship.
During this time, I had the privilege of working on a variety of projects that allowed me to develop invaluable skills such as #problemsolving, #criticalthinking, #attentiontodetail, and #communicationskills. One of the most notable projects I contributed to involved replacing combustible cladding with non-combustible cladding on a seven-story building, and another project was carrying out repairs to a listed building, which I worked on from start to finish.
I also carried out multiple site inspections across different locations to ensure that each project was progressing smoothly and met high standards. Writing detailed site reports was a key part of my role, allowing me to further develop strong communication and technical writing skills.
Throughout my time at #BrittainHadley, I gained #projectmanagement, #teamwork, #communication and #siteinspection experience, enhancing my understanding of the construction process from inception to completion.
I’m excited to apply these skills as I continue to grow and take on new challenges.

The debate is over!
Interns who have great hands-on experiences like to tell everyone about it.
In this video, Nolan, a WisDOT Civil Engineer and former intern, talks at a roundabout project on the State Highway 60 Roadway at Eagle Drive in Jackson, Wisconsin.
It is just another day in the life of thousands of construction workers across the U.S.
As a construction intern Nolan shared the value of watching something get built while being outside rather than sitting in the office all day.
I love this quote:
“Working this summer felt less of like a business and more of like a learning community. Everyone was willing to help me. Everyone was willing to teach me. I really enjoyed that and I felt like it would be a great way to spend the rest of my career.”
He got to see different job sites and experience different things. He saw that as very valuable in assessing what he wanted to do with his future and chose WisDOT.
Principles were most likely at the heart of the way the internship was constructed. So, add that to your punch list.
I acknowledge WisDOT for designing a wonderful hands-on internship program and engineering this 2-minute video. They have cemented a positive impression on me and everyone who surveys their work.
No need to go in circles in a roundabout. The debate is over. Hands-on experiences are valued by interns.
P.S. Now, what would your intern say about their internship with you? No judgment, just look.

True meaning of my next accomplished internship
As I hold this certificate in my hands, I realize it's not just a piece of paper; it's a testament to the evolution of my professional hour. After completing several internships, including a recent enriching stint at iBuild, I've realised that an internship compresses six months of education into just one month of intense, practical learning.
Each internship has been a brilliant journey of skill acquisition. Still, it's also been a stark reminder that internships alone don't fully equip you for the rigorous commitment a job demands. A job takes up 80% of your life and requires every ounce of dedication. It's about investing time wisely and enhancing skills that exponentially increase the value of every work hour.
Earlier, a part-time job may have earned me $25 per hour. Post-education, perhaps $40. But sprinkle in the experience gained, and the rate could rise to $60 per hour. It's not just about growing as a person; it's about elevating each hour's worth in the face of inflation, much like the rising cost of a car or property.
I'm grateful to iBuild Construction for contributing to this growth and for making each future hour I invest more valuable. The real currency isn't money, skills, or experience – it's time. And thanks to iBuild, I'm richer in time than I've ever been.
Here's to valuing our hours and to those who help us enhance their worth. Onwards and upwards! ⏱️💼
