During the final day of the Thermo Fisher Scientific sales conference VP of Sales Nicholas J. Urban shared this question: Are you an energy drain or an energy fountain? It was a question borrowed from a legendary story where a college football coach challenged Kansas City Chiefs Tight End Travis Kelce to step up: “I need fountains,” the coach growled at Kelce. “I don’t need f—ing drains. Travis, you’re f—ing draaaining me!” The moment is said to have been a defining one for Travis and the story certainly resonated with me. It served as a potent reminder that the energy you bring to any situation depends less on outside circumstances and more on your internal resolve in responding to those circumstances. Amateurs react to change. They get moved off their spot, get uncomfortable, lose control of their emotions. That’s not what top producers do. They respond intentionally. They see adversity coming and say, "What can I learn? Where's my opportunity to grow? Where's my opportunity to get an advantage?" Fountain energy is where it's at. I need fountains! Historically a majority of our deal flow in the Midwest is from ‘mom & pop’ operators who sell for any number of reasons: no heir to throne, looming deferred maintenance, lack of interest in operating the communities, misalignment in local/regional direction – the list goes on.
