One thing I've seen as an engineer is that a lot of places don't have the proper support for maximising the value of a new or junior engineering hire. The "state of the art" is frequently a document about onboarding and "learn-as-you-go" with some pairing along the way, if you're lucky. Frequently, this is because teams feel like they don't have the time, tools, or expertise to improve this process. At the end of the day, this sucks: the new team member feels like they're too slow and the team isn't taking full advantage of their skills. It takes time for them to become familiar with your business processes, development lifecycle, and specific tools. A $10k/month engineer can’t have $100/month of tooling? That’s just mathematically illiterate. An organisation’s employees are another set of users, not just your customers and partners. Treat them accordingly, with a “product manager” and backlog for employee experience. There is a well understood correlation between happy employees, productivity and how customers are supported.
