BT (Retired)/Widower Trustee with the Charity "Beads of Courage UK", which was formerly named "Be Child Cancer Aware"
Children's rights in hospital are certainly very important and need highlighting! ...Well done CCLG!! 🎗️❤️ But I feel that I have to say that I find two things that are not entirely correct in this: (Both under the title: "The Right to Safety and Environment" in the Research Roundup - The second is by far the most important in my opinion!) ------ 1. "Hospitals USUALLY ALSO ALLOW A PARENT TO STAY WITH THEIR CHILD, which can help children feel safer and more comfortable." [In my experience, parents are EXPECTED to stay with their children! ...which almost all want to do anyway, especially with younger children!] & 2. "Hospitals are also always trying to improve and give children AND FAMILIES lots of opportunities to give feedback about the care they have received. This can highlight whether there are issues like UNSUITABLE FOOD, poor accessibility, or if improvements are needed in the ward’s cleaning." [Also in my experience, parents DO NOT get any food provided for them when in hospital with their children in the UK, and haven't been for years! *See page 8 (Item No. 11) of the WHO document! - free meals for parents!!? - it says, under "Meaningful Progress": "Most parents are allowed and encouraged to stay with their children AND have other rights in hospital, such as free meals"!!?] ------ *Please see my comment below.
Do you know that children have rights when they're in the hospital? Children deserve the best care possible whilst facing cancer, and have the right to high-quality services, play and learning, and much more. These rights can help children with cancer and their families feel more supported during their hospital experience, which could help their emotional well-being during and after treatment 💛 Check out our latest #ResearchRoundup blog post where we explore the important rights children have in hospital, and see how these are being assessed and improved: https://bit.ly/3VcmdhG #CCLG #ChildhoodCancer #ChildhoodCancerResearch

Words of Wisdom #4 Appreciate Life. Life isn’t about the big stuff, life is in the smallest of moments. Life is your child holding your hand; life is falling asleep next to your best friend; life is sharing a laugh without saying a word. Life happens every day and if your eyes and heart are open, you’ll see those little things are what this life is about. No one knows how much time is in their hourglass so appreciate, be grateful and enjoy the moments you are given. To donate to cancer research, consider https://lnkd.in/g5ErtsQW

Childhood Cancer Facts — United States 👉Childhood cancer research is consistently underfunded. 👉Each day, 47 children are diagnosed with cancer in the United States, which means more than 17,000 children in the U.S. are diagnosed each year. 👉Cancer is the leading cause of death by disease in American children, resulting in the death of approximately 1,800 kids each year. 👉There are approximately 500,000 childhood cancer survivors in the United States. 👉In the United States, 85% of children diagnosed with cancer are alive at least five years after diagnosis; however this does not mean they are cured or free from long-term side effects. 👉Even those who are cured may suffer long-term side effects as a result of the cancer treatments they received. Children who were treated for cancer are twice as likely to suffer chronic health conditions later in life versus children without a history of cancer.

I’ve come to understand that the cancer journey can feel isolating at times. We’re surrounded by people, but still, it’s hard to find someone who truly understands what we’re going through. That’s why I created Morning Talks—a special space where we don’t need to explain every little detail. Here, the people around us just get it. It’s not about being strong every day. It’s about creating a safe environment where you can be honest, vulnerable, and even uncertain. Whether you’re in the middle of treatment or just starting the recovery process, you deserve a space where you can open up. Sometimes, we just need to talk. Sometimes, we just need to be heard. Morning Talks is a gathering of women who understand that healing isn’t linear. It’s a rollercoaster of emotions, and no one should have to ride it alone. Come as you are, and know that there’s no right or wrong way to participate. Whether you feel like sharing your story or simply being present, you’ll find a community that will meet you where you are with love, support, and understanding. If that sounds like something you need, we’d love to welcome you to our next session. 💗 Join us for free on our next session happening on October 30.
