Satire is such an effective tool for story telling. The trick is how do we turn laughs and discomfort into action and positive behavior change for consumers. Furthermore, it really can't only be about consumers being conscious, industry and government need to play a key role to have an impact on systemic-level issues like this one. It's the same issue with recycling plastics and single use items, it all falls on the consumer's shoulders when in fact, the real problem is the impunity that the plastics industry has, and the total lack of governmental policy to make them responsible for the materials they put out in the world.
I love it when SNL does my job for me. So accurate in so many ways. In a more serious vein, one thing this video touches upon is the spread of addictive hyper-consumption across the apparel industry's shared consumer base. I'd love to hear from different companies about how we can do a better job helping consumers shift their behaviors. Any strategies from smart folks out there?

5 things we do with brands to minimize bad-sellers and shelf-warmers. In our 2-3 day Collection Clarity Workshops, we run through a set process from where the brand is and where the brand wants to be. Brands go from a messy, chaotic collection with too many products - to a consolidated, clear collection with products the market wants and that supports the brand’s longterm goal. In a world with overproduction where every season 30% of the products made are never sold - it’s a HUGE monetary, time and resource loss. We want to change that. Here’s how we approach it: 1. Get clarity on who the target customer is. Many brands have no clue…. 2. Get clarity on what activities and segments the brands creates products for. Most of the time there are way too many segments with no focus - resulting in a scattered collection 3. Get clarity on icon, core and base product ratio. Innovation products vs cash cow products. 4. Get clarity on product category ratio - tops vs bottoms, layering system etc 5.
