We’re celebrating our Vicennium! I’d just like to thank everyone that has commented, or congratulated me on our 20 years in business at EDIT. I think I’ve replied to everyone, but in case I missed you – thank you. In celebration, we are offering some amazing deals for the first 20 NEW customers - in Managed IT Support, Website\Web App Development & VoIP Telephony. Contact me for more details, it’s a real one off, and genuine discount. To think that I never really intended to be a business owner, it turned out to be one of the best decisions I ever made. Not sure how I would have got on as a postie, but that was seriously my other thought, after a long stint in the corporate world, left me somewhat disillusioned. Being a business owner, you sacrifice a lot, but you learn a lot too. It was also quite a risk, with having a young family to support at the time, and I certainly sacrificed my time with them in order to establish the business. Hopefully, I’ve paid them back somewhat at least, over more recent years. So what have I learned in my 20 years? Every day is a school day, if you’re willing to take the lesson. You get out, what you put in. Stay motivated. Business is both challenging and rewarding. Make sure the balance is in favour of reward. Everything is on me, and why wouldn’t it be? But the variety of roles you have to step into is vast. Make your own path. You don’t have to follow anyone. Set your own standards and values. Hold onto them. They will represent you for a long time. Managing people is tough. Plan for them to let you down. Be genuine in what you do. We are an ethical company, often competing against those who aren’t. Customers are not always able to discern the difference, especially on face value. BIG challenge! Networking is the best long term investment you’ll ever make. Relationships reward! Most people go into networking to get referrals, but it feels great to give referrals. Customers are fantastic. Keep hold of these. Customers are terrible. Let these go. Suppliers will let you down, and throw you under the bus. Choose wisely. Celebrate your successes. Reward your team. Make decisions. Far better to make a decision and keep moving (even if it’s the wrong one), than to stall completely, due to indecision. Particularly when running a team. Don’t leave them hanging. Be prepared to change. Recognise when it’s wrong and improve. Be adaptable. Is that the same thing? I don’t think so. The fear of doing something is usually far worse than actually doing it. That’s a bit of a list. I could go on, but I won’t. Thanks to all our customers, friends, colleagues and associates who have supported us. Martin
