High quality digital enterprise systems (e.g. Student Records or ERP) are important for the efficient and effective running of universities, but choosing and implementing them can be challenging due to limited resources and experience. I've enjoyed spending much of the last eight years helping a number of universities buy these systems - both the software and the associated implementation and integration services. This experience has led me to propose five key steps: 1. Adopt a pragmatic, market-led approach 2. Combine services and software into a single procurement exercise 3. Facilitate genuine, two-way engagement with potential suppliers 4. Negotiate a robust contract with effective incentives and remedies 5.
