There's two books I wish every business leader would read... 'Playing to Win' by Roger Martin should be a mandatory read for every leader at all levels in an organisation. However, it should be coupled with 'The Five Dysfunctions of a Team', (https://lnkd.in/gvH3Xthv), by Patrick Lencioni. As Roger says in many of his books and interviews, "our strategy is not what we say it is, it's what we do", ensuring the team commits to and "does" the choices in the Playing to Win strategy cascade while obvious is likely to be more difficult than making the choices for most organisations. 'The Five Dysfunctions of a Team' is written as a story to clearly bring to life challenges of truly collaborating to play to win all leadership teams experience and must resolve, (not to mention the employees reporting to these leaders). Hand in a B paper. Hey all you high achieving, excellence pursuing, ‘don’t know when to let it go’ leaders...this post’s for you. Guess what? Sometimes it’s o.k. if you hand in a “B” paper! For real! One of the secrets that uber-busy, stretched-too-thin, senior executives know how to do is stop wasting time over-engineering non-value added activities. They know that by spending their energy on things that give diminishing returns, they’re taking their time and focus away from the things that are actually going to make a difference to the business. Next time you’re at your desk at 10 p.m. making sure everything in your power point slide is ‘perfect’, ask yourself “is what I’m doing right now adding to the bottom or top line of the business?” If the answer is no, pack it up.
