Being a stay-at-home parent is a full-time job. I left my career as a Corrections Officer before my second deployment, and once I got home, I hit the ground running. I’ve earned my Associate’s degree in Business Administration, taken advantage of LinkedIn Learning, and explored free professional development courses—all while starting a family and shifting to full-time caregiver. I don’t know exactly what the future holds, but I do know that growth doesn’t have to stop! #linkedinlearning #professionaldevelopment #stayathomeparent

Two weeks ago, at 53 years old, I did a thing. >This old dog< decided to go back to school to learn some new tricks. I'm not going to lie- this is terrifying. For the past 22 years I've been out of the workforce while raising a son, keeping a home (I'm admittedly no Martha Stewart or June Clever), and running a 2,700 home community club while also defeating attempted rezones (2!) on my neighborhood shopping center. I have a lot of desirable 'soft skills' but am lacking the 'hard skills' to compete in today's job market. So, I thought of Renton Technical College where 22 years ago I received a certificate in Medical Billing & Coding while pregnant with my son (I never used it because I was busy 'Mom-ing'). I enrolled in the Legal Assistant AAS program. It will take me 5-7 quarters depending upon whether credits from my AAS at Whatcom Community College transfer (1991 *was* when dinosaurs roamed the earth, right? 😉). I found out on the first night of class that *this quarter* is the hardest quarter of the entire program. Sink or swim, baby. I'm doing a combo of backstroke/freestyle/doggie paddle, whatever it takes to get me through with decent grades. I'm shooting for a 4.0. Keep your fingers crossed for me. What to do after I get my AAS? Estate Planning & Elder Law, utilizing my previous professional history in senior healthcare & living? Land Use, utilizing what I learned during two gnarly & very technical fights to the death for my neighborhood shopping center? Work for the court system or a municipality? Here's to all the students improving their lives through continuing education 🍾🎉🎉 It was an incredibly diverse group at my orientation session. May we all make it to the finish line in one piece and find fulfilling and well-paying jobs. (And if you're good with Excel DM if you can help- that class is going to be my downfall)

Opportunity neighborhoods, while well-intentioned, often overlook the importance of existing social networks and the reluctance many families have to leave their communities. Uprooting families can disrupt vital social networks that provide emotional and financial support (e.g., childcare), which are critical for long-term well-being. Additionally, simply moving to a more affluent area doesn’t guarantee access to relevant job opportunities or education, particularly when transportation infrastructure and local job markets don’t align with residents’ needs. Instead, it is important that we invest in the local infrastructure of under-resourced neighborhoods by improving schools, healthcare, public transportation, and job availability. This offers a more sustainable path to upward mobility, empowering communities to thrive without forcing relocation, preserving social ties and allowing residents to access better opportunities where they live.
