When I was in school taking a government or social studies class, lobbying was usually discussed as an unfortunate side effect of our system of government. There usually was a paragraph in the textbooks saying, almost as an after-thought, something like, "On the other hand, there is a special interest group for everyone, and so even the average citizen has a voice in the political process." Having attended The ESOP Association conferences for many years now, I have seen first hand that the after-thought has a lot of truth to it. I probably would change it to say that if there is an issue you care about, you can find many like-minded people, and probably an organization, devoted to that issue, and engage in constructive dialogue with government leaders. That's what the Association does. It brings ESOP and employee ownership advocates together to learn from each other, and it educates policy makers in the government about the benefits of employee ownership. It's impressive in terms of both the effort the Association puts forth and the substantive accomplishments it archives for employee ownership. Especially if you're an employee-owned company or thinking of becoming one, attend a conference, even a local chapter one. If you want a chance to talk to government officials, go to the national conference in May. You'll be inspired being surrounded by so many people either like you or who have gone through what you are going through and willing to share their wisdom!

For those of you involved in learner mobility, credential verification, and data portability and interoperability, requesting you stretch internationally and have a look at the work of a pretty important organization called The GDN Network which inspired MyCreds in Canada, My eQuals in Australia, and extension of work by people in regions like the Asia Pacific, India, Africa, Mexico, China, Europe, US and more. The social justice work of the GDN matters; frankly, it matters for learners and is worth a look!
