Wetlands are crucial for our ecosystem, providing habitats for numerous species and benefits like flood protection and water quality improvement. Yet, recent changes have shifted the responsibility for their protection from federal to state levels. In May 2023, the Supreme Court's decision in Sackett v. EPA limited federal oversight of wetlands under the Clean Water Act. Consequently, states now bear more responsibility for safeguarding these vital resources.
