Investing in our future generations is so important

As a 360-degree learning studio, Slingshot engages interns as part of the team, setting them up and supporting them to lead holistic and challenging projects and processes. Architectural interns Jessica Ritland and Noah Johnson are working on a project that explores the ground entry conditions of downtown Des Moines’ residential buildings. Their work involves analyzing planning and zoning code, and exploring optimistic alternatives. They are developing a library of resources — a “toolbox of design” — for downtown ground floor entry points. Not only will the package of deliverables benefit architects, designers, and downtown advocates, it has also provided an exciting experience for Noah and Jessica. What are their takeaways? “My knowledge on the written code and processes buildings go through to become a reality has exponentially increased. This would never have been something I would have been taught in college and so it has been fantastic to be so directly involved with it at Slingshot,” Noah says. “Our project revolves around an issue that does not have an exact answer or finish line. This conversation is one that is convoluted and will never follow a linear progression. The process of untangling this topic and exploring our own avenues has been challenging, eye-opening, and a process that I've very much enjoyed. 𝗔: I have been greatly inspired by my Dad, who was a very successful builder here on the Coast and more recently, at 79 years of age, a judge for HIA Building Awards. Decades later his most iconic builds still stand proud on Minyama Island and Moffat Beach. Growing up here on the Coast and being surrounded by all aspects of the building trade has helped me understand construction and the intricacies of real estate. 𝗤: 𝗔𝗻𝘆 𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗿𝘀? 𝗔: I long aspired to be an architect. When I was a kid I would draw hundreds of floorplans and bring the plans to life with Legos! Complete houses with internal walls and north facing pools! In my teens I did a summer internship with a local Architecture firm and a CAD (Computer Aided Drafting) course however somewhere along the way I changed paths. 𝗤: 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘁? 𝗔: Helping people along their property journey. It is so rewarding when you successfully connect people with the property they have been searching for. I truly care about the outcomes of the clients. 𝗤: 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁'𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝘂𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗮𝘀𝘁? 𝗔: The beaches, of course! I love walking along the beach especially the coastal path from Dicky Beach to Golden Beach. 𝗤: 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗳𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗴𝗼𝗮𝗹𝘀? 𝗔: In many ways my real estate journey has only just begun! My goals from here are centred around connecting people with properties by recognising the needs of clients and collaborating with a knowledgeable and supportive team. If there ever comes a time when we can manipulate time (let's just ignore how that statement can mess with the mind for now), would I take up the opportunity to do so? The age gap in our team can be up to 2 decades (20 years!!). And obviously it will only increase with time. Typical generational cultural disconnects aside, our respective professional attitudes inevitably also differ. It can be a source of conflict, even though the field of work is clearly the same - in design or architecture. This is further complicated when you bring in another party - the client. How they engage with us, will inevitably also be a reflection of how their own generation deal with matters concerning professional work. It can be complex dynamic! I very often struggle with finding the balance. It seems simple enough: understand the client, understand my team tasked to that project, understand my own professional expectations as someone approaching my mid-40s, understand the whole consultant team. Then give up and dive in with eyes open. Maybe that's all that matters. Treat the passage of time as what it is - something that ceaselessly moves forward, taking us all along for a ride so long as we are mindful, and don't take the minutiae too seriously. Honestly the size of our team versus the impact we are having astounds me. We care on a different level about our customers, about our impact and about access for all who bleed. We also care enough to keep improving, adapting and innovating - 2024/25 is going to be something else. I'm struggling to pick what I'm most proud of impact wise, and it's strange as now that I write them they sound like they are so very obviously the right things to be doing that they shouldn't need highlighting at all... 1. Our approach to be unapologetically inclusive for all genders. As a part of the LGBTQ community, this year has been difficult to see, hear and experience the rising levels of hate towards trans, nb and gender non confirming folks. Being able to welcome all who bleed into our community and advocate for access for everyone who may need products has provided a much needed outlet of light amongst the wider landscape of increased marginalisation for LGBTQ+ folks. 2. Our work with Councils to deliver products to those who need them most, to promote autonomy, and dignity for young people no matter their circumstances. You can read all the stats below, which speak for themselves. But what really gets me is the stories. "Money is tight at the moment and [by receiving a subscription box] it's one less thing to worry about for my parents. I'm happy my period isn't causing them extra money worries". Whilst we as a small company have had a positive impact this past year, I'd like to see Westminster following the shining examples from Scottish Government and Senedd and doing more to tackle period poverty at a national level alongside introducing more sustainable procurement practises. We need systemic change to enable dignity for all. ✌
