An interesting report by Ben James that breaks down the challenges of making fusion economically viable. An alternative future for clean, #renewable, abundant energy is space based solar power. No new physics are required to make it work. Its an engineering problem that was feasible 50 years ago but not economic at the time [1]. The recent drop in launch costs makes it economically viable today. It can be the most mineral and resource efficient way to generate power. Most importantly, it can be less expensive than ground #solar, #wind or any other energy source. The ESA SOLARIS [2] and Space Energy Initiative [3] have great FAQ's on this technology. Vicky, you may or may not be familiar with Sweden's small modular reactor SMR design, PIUS. I worked in nuclear weapons effects mitigation (EMP, Comptons etc) with some cross overs into power reactor technology. My strong impression is the that the 'new' Terrapower and similar SMR designs are the progeny of the eerily similar design the Swedes proposed 40 yrs. ago. One might even say reverse engineered from the PIUS design. That brings to mind the saying 'success has a thousand fathers, failure is an orphan'. In point of fact, after futile attempts to have the design properly evaluated by the NRC, the design was rejected (by GE, B&W, Westinghouse the usual) as being an 'untested 'foreign' technology'). LANL, SNL, Livermore thought it was great stuff but US corporate NIH stopped it cold in its tracks. Funny how that works.

All power must be on the table and happens to be about political will. All power sources are gray, but some greener than others. Political will matters. Dan
