Moving to New York City for NYU significantly changed my perspective. Initially, the city's diversity was daunting. Every interaction and every new face meant stepping out of my comfort zone. But soon, this diversity became an advantage, offering unique viewpoints that contributed to my personal development. The fast-paced nature of New York taught me resilience. I learned to rely on myself, growing more confident and decisive. It was a practical, on-the-ground education in adapting quickly to new challenges. In this city, I saw firsthand how different people chase success. From artists to startup founders, each person had their unique approach, underscoring that there's no single path to achieving your goals. This realization was crucial, both for my personal life and my career in music and now software engineering as well. Moving to New York wasn't just about attending NYU. It was a period of significant personal and professional growth, teaching me the value of adaptability, confidence, and learning from those around me. The photo below, taken on move-in day in August 2012, shows me, my brother, and our mother. Have you experienced a similar growth in a new environment? #NYCJourney • #EmbracingDiversity • #SoftwareEngineering --- 🧑💻 Empowering everyday business people to embrace coding. ♻️ Repost if you found this valuable.

Hybrid work is changing how campus planners need to make decisions. InnerSpace's Brennan Stang, Director of Customer Success, shares an example of how an Ivy League Institution chose to spend $40 million on a parking lot rather than a wet lab renovation by assuming that after the pandemic staff levels would return to normal and the school would need additional staff parking. Hybrid work became the norm, and they did not see the staffing levels they had anticipated. As a result, the expensive parking lot is half empty, and the wet labs that attract so much funding and innovation for the school still need to be modernized. This example underscores the critical role of accurate data in making sound real estate decisions on campus. If your school is grappling with a similar predicament, it's time to eliminate guesswork from the equation. Invest in good spatial utilization data, a smart move that will underpin good long-term decisions for your institution. https://hubs.ly/Q02sCWbX0 #highereducation #campusplanning

This week marks the start of a new term, and the final 3 weeks of teaching at the University of Winchester and in the UK 🇬🇧! Whilst I am incredibly excited to be joining Florida Tech 🇺🇸 I am sad to be leaving a great institution, a passionate and dedicated faculty and our talented students. But my journey in Winchester has provided a lot of learning opportunities. 1️⃣I have learned the power of student potential. Every question they have asked has sharpened my own understanding 📚 and teaching philosophy 🎓. #StudentSuccess #AcademicJourney 2️⃣Irrespective of the UK to the US, I have seen that while the setting may change, the drive for teaching excellence remains the same. Adapting my methods to meet diverse student needs has been both a challenge and a joy. 🌍👩🏫 and I look forward to enhancing my teaching skills #LifelongLearning #Education 3️⃣Collaboration is at the heart of learning. At the University of Winchester, working closely with our students taught me that the best insights often come from group engagement and collaborative innovation. I am excited to continue developing dynamic and innovative collaborative tasks and will be bringing this approach to Florida Tech! 🤝 #Teamwork #EducationalInnovation 4️⃣Reflecting on my time at Winchester, I have learned that every end is just a new beginning. The questions, discussions, and challenges posed by my students have been invaluable in shaping my academic interests and progression. 🔄📖 #EndingsAndBeginings #AcademicLife 5️⃣As I prepare for my role at Florida Tech, I’m reminded of the universality of student curiosity and ambition. The exchange of cultural and educational insights is what I look forward to the most. 🌐🎓 #CulturalExchange #NewBeginnings”

One year ago, I stepped into the role as President and CEO of DeVry University, a place I’ve been proud to call home for 20 years. This past year has been nothing short of transformative—not just for me, but for the university and for everyone who became part of our learning community. Those who know me know that I've always believed in the power of education to change lives, but this year brought that belief into sharper focus. Every decision made has been driven by one question: How can we better serve both students and partners? From launching new AI courses at lightning speed to maintaining our commitment to affordability, it’s been a year of listening, learning, and relentless action. In a recent Q&A, I shared more about what this year has taught me: the importance of transparent communication, the urgency of innovating at pace, and the ongoing challenge of breaking down barriers to education. It reinforced the importance of looking ahead—balancing the demands of today while making decisions that shape our future and position DeVry for what's next. Our work is far from over which is why I am more energized than ever for what's to come. If you’re interested in hearing more about my reflections, I invite you to take a look at the full Q&A. Exciting news! After months of planning and organizing, the inaugural Los Angeles Regional Consortium (LARC) Faculty Equity Learning Community (FELC) officially kicked off with its first workshop on September 27, 2024! 🎉 We brought together 50 passionate faculty members from Los Angeles County's community colleges to dive deep into important conversations on equity—defining what it means for professors individually and collectively, and exploring how to be more equity-minded in educational work. 🌱 Some of the key topics that were tackled: - The role of self-awareness in understanding how our identities show up in diverse spaces. - The significance of positionality, power, cultural competence, and cultural humility in education. - How not just educators but also institutions hold a responsibility to create truly equitable learning environments for ALL students. 📚 This first workshop was all about getting on the same page, sharing personal stories and reflections, and aligning on a shared vision for improving student success and closing equity gaps for the brightest mind of the future. What's especially inspiring is that this project is facilitated by professors, for professors—with educators from across #LACounty and 4 incredible FELC leaders and facilitators from Santa Ana College in #OrangeCounty! This is the sort of multiregional collaboration that addresses and solves longstanding systemic challenges impacting our Californian student population--it's also exciting to boot! 🤝 The energy during the virtual workshop was palpable, and I can't wait to see the lasting impact of this community college work. We're just getting started, and the best is yet to come! 🚀 #EquityInAction #FacultyCollaboration #StudentSuccess #HigherEdEquity #CollectiveImpact #EducationInnovation #CommunityColleges

It's move-in season! 🏡 📦 Let's take a moment for all of the hard work that Residential Life & Housing, Orientation, Maintenance, Public Safety, Dining and so many other teams put into making sure the first couple weeks of school are full of happy memories. ❤️ These teams really, really care about the safety and well-being of their on-campus communities. And it ain't easy: Excited students send lots of emails that can never get answered on time 💻 Worried parents make phone calls that send staff running in all directions 📞 Leadership wants a table set up here not there; language updates on communication that was supposed to roll out today ⏳ Rain, heat, traffic - all bad, all beyond their control 🛑 This time of year can be very stimulating for folks in higher education... 😅 Simply put, they're asked to do more with less every year! That's why I'm grateful I get to help teams find solutions using StarRez, Inc. every single day. 🌟 For example: Use a QR code for Fast Check-In so residents can focus on settling in instead of standing in line ✅ Schedule pre-written emails with move-in instructions (again) so they're received the night before and they're at the top of folks' inboxes; or use SMS for messaging about urgent updates and outages 🔥 Easily build reports and display them on dashboards to campus partners that need data in real-time 📊 If you have a friend or colleague that's working on a campus this time of year, I encourage you to send them a kind message letting them know just how much their work matters to you and your community. 📱 The picture below is a throwback to our Fall 2016 move-in with the best team ever at University of the Pacific! Maria Lazaro Otaegui Rosie Simpson Heather S. Pearson Villeda Torry Brouillard-Bruce Michael Krieger I learned so much from these folks, wouldn't be who I am without them! Proud of the work we did then, proud of the work I do now 🏫 #ResidenceLife #ResEd #College #HigherEducation #HigherEd #Dorms #Housing #Operations #PropertyTechnology #PropTech #EducationTechnology #EdTech #Software #SaaS #StaRez
