Are you curious about the drives behind teachers' integration of technology in the classroom? Me too! and together with Kairit Tammets and Linda Helene Sillat we have been digging into the motivational and psychological factors behind the adoption of technologies in education. We presented the results of our research at the #ECTEL24 conference, which was a fantastic event filled with engaging discussions with inspiring researchers, new insights and ideas for future research, a wonderful landscape and the joy of reconnecting with friends from the European Association of Technology Enhanced Learning community. In our paper, we investigated how motivational factors affect the adoption of technology in a whole-school intervention in Estonia, where teachers and students were provided with Chromebooks. We approached this study using the expectancy-value-cost and ICAP frameworks. We found modest changes in instructional practices after the intervention, mainly involving passive-active learning. However, we observed that integrating Chromebooks posed unexpected challenges and required more resources than anticipated, leading teachers to rely on familiar and effortless methods. Additionally, our results showed a slight decrease in teachers' expectancy and task value, accompanied by an increase in perceived costs after the intervention. This reflects a more realistic understanding of the efforts needed to create engaging activities with technology. Our study suggests that when teachers recognize the benefits of Chromebooks and encounter fewer barriers, they are more likely to implement engaging and complex teaching strategies. Effective technology integration requires more than just professional development; schools should cultivate supportive environments that foster innovation, reduce barriers, and provide necessary resources to help teachers confidently adopt engaging practices. Since integrating technology in the classroom represents a behavioral change for teachers, future research should explore additional factors involved in this process, such as teachers' psychological needs and individual dispositions. 🌿 As a Green School teacher, I've spent the past year exploring ways to create a paperless classroom. The obvious alternative was technology, and embracing it has been a wonderful realization. Technology proves to be even more impactful than it appears from the shore. During my research, I discovered various apps, all highly efficient in enhancing the learning experience. What truly stood out was how this shift towards a digital approach fostered greater independence among my students, increasing their agency and responsibility for their own learning. This journey was essentially about improving their digital literacy and making them more familiar with technology. While we are only halfway towards achieving a fully paperless classroom, we are already reaping significant benefits. Digital labs, for instance, mean that teachers no longer need to spend time collecting, organizing, and preserving physical resources. Instead, we can dedicate more time and focus to student learning. Self-learning apps have made students more comfortable and given them control of their learning. These apps also showed them other options, such as exploring similar topics or taking the topic to a higher level than their grade. As we continue on this path, it's clear that the journey towards a paperless classroom is not just about reducing paper usage but about fostering a more engaging, independent, and forward-thinking learning environment. I am excited to see how these advancements will shape the future of education and empower our students to thrive in a digital world. #GreenSchool #PaperlessClassroom #EdTech #DigitalLiteracy #IndependentLearning #Sustainability #EducationInnovation

Tech in classrooms is trending, but why aren't students learning more? Do you think it's a tech issue? It's deeper. Let's dive into the overlooked reasons behind the failure of tech-driven education policies. 1/ 𝗟𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗼𝗳 𝗜𝗻𝗳𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲: Picture a school with cutting-edge tech but no reliable internet. It's like having a sports car with no fuel. 2/ 𝗜𝗻𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗘𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴: Handing high-tech tools to untrained teachers? It's like handing someone a map in a language they can't read. 3/ 𝗢𝗻𝗲-𝗦𝗶𝘇𝗲-𝗙𝗶𝘁𝘀-𝗔𝗹𝗹 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵: Each school has its unique fingerprint. What works in one may not in another, especially in a country as diverse as India. 4/ 𝗣𝗲𝗱𝗮𝗴𝗼𝗴𝘆 𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆: It’s not about the tech; it's how you use it. The focus should be on teaching methods, not tools. 5/ 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲: Change is hard. It’s about guiding educators and students to embrace new methods. 6/𝗕𝘂𝗱𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝘀: Implementing cutting-edge technology often hits a financial roadblock, leaving schools with half-baked solutions. 7/ 𝗟𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗼𝗳 𝗘𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆: Without measuring impact, we're shooting in the dark, hoping to hit the target. 8/ 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗜𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗲𝘀: Tech that’s not maintained or updated becomes as obsolete as yesterday’s newspaper, a wasteful and short-sighted investment. So, what's the solution? It begins with recognizing these challenges and proactively addressing them: - Tailor tech solutions to each school's unique needs. - Invest in ongoing professional development for educators. - Focus on pedagogy-driven technology use. - Implement technology in phases, allowing for adaptation and feedback. - Create a culture that embraces change. - Plan for cost-effective and sustainable technology use. - Establish regular evaluation and feedback mechanisms. - Ensure long-term support and updates for tech resources. 𝗗𝗠 𝗺𝗲. 𝗜 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗴𝘂𝗶𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗱𝗼𝗽𝘁 𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀. Let's ensure your technology investment truly makes a difference!

One of the most significant challenges that school leaders face today is selecting the right tools for educators to help them improve academic outcomes for all students and prepare them for future workplaces. Technology can be leveraged to solve many school challenges, and the complicated issue of diverse educational needs and increasing workload is no exception. But to break the vicious cycle of increasing workloads pushing educators away from classrooms and, in the process, creating a more significant workload for the ones who are left, a tech tool would need to be one that simultaneously removes any systemic barriers to knowledge for students and reduces teacher workload. A tool built with the Universal Design for Learning guidelines at its core can offer school administrators a way to improve all student outcomes and teacher working conditions at the same time.
