At the Mastercard Foundation #EdTech Connect last August in #Kigali, we had the privilege of engaging with several organizations providing EdTech solutions in Africa. It was a privilege to also understand the massive innovations addressing Africa’s learning outcomes. Of all the partners on show, EduTAMS stood out for their innovative play with data and addressing data for policymaking in Education. Ademola ADENUBI, Ph.D, CEO of EduTAMS also knew his onions and demonstrated an in-depth experience of a ‘tech-bro’ who understood the local context and how to play in it and succeed using technology. One of his comments caught our attention; ‘If you query our public system for data 20 times, you will receive 20 different datasets’. This indeed underscores the problem of data-driven decision-making as we know it. We cannot address the learning constraints in Africa if we do not provide quality data. It is largely for this reason that ADEA is partnering with the Mastercard Foundation Centre for Innovative Teaching and Learning to implement the project tagged, ‘Addressing the Education Skills Data Challenge in Africa’. In this episode of ADEA’s Africa Learning Together Knowledge Series, we recorded a podcast with Ademola ADENUBI, Ph.D to understand the education data issues as we know it and how he addressed the human component to data quality leveraging technology. This is a rich, insightful and educative conversation with lots of examples on how to manage the human components that often lead to poor quality data, leveraging a case study from Ogun state, Nigeria. This past weekend, I attended the EdTech Festival at iHub Nairobi. The event was fun-filled, with a lot of lessons to pick. It was impressive to find a galaxy of EdTech companies showcasing their products. Among the dominant areas in conversations at the festival included; 👉 The EdTech space is expanding, and there is clarity of direction on where the future of learning is, it is in technology. 👉 We are a long way to go in developing policies and minimum standards that will aid the growth and entrenchment of technology in education. 👉 Big players are taking a stride investing in education technology, with organizations like the Mastercard Foundation, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and OpenAI among the big players in the sector. 👉 There is a growing push among EdTech players to incorporate evidence in their development and deployment of products, as advocated for by the EdTech Hub, so as to achieve the desired learning outcomes. 👉 The future of EdTech is in collaboration, where partners must come together to provide 360-degree solutions to learners, teachers and institutions, all with the common aim of improving learning outcomes. Such events as this one will only keep the EdTech on a path of growth and scale, with common interests finding a space to share insights.

During my #masterclass at the Global Africa Tech Conference 2024, held last week, I used #Finland as a case study on the importance of #media #literacy. Finland is ranked number 1 globally when it comes to media literacy. #Kids in Finland start learning about disinformation, fake #news and other areas of media literacy from daycare. Most of the recent violent protests in the world were coordinated by media. Countries that pay serious #attentions to media literacy are winning the war against disinformation, fake news and other cyber-related problems. As a nation, we need to have all-encompassing #policies for digital literacy and media literacy that are included in our school-based activities and home-based activities.
