8 education trends bringing disruption in 2023 A new study is shedding light on some of the most important and impactful education trends that will take hold in 2023

Sierra Leone has embarked on an ambitious series of education investments and reforms. Central to this transformation has been a belief that a better understanding of what the system looks like and how it is performing, can lead to better decisions and improved outcomes. Over recent years, Cambridge Education, Fab Inc. and EdTech Hub have separately been partnering with the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE) to improve various aspects of education data collection and use. This includes improvements to the Annual School Census, using data to better forecast teacher needs and deployment, reducing data duplication, and developing national-scale school-based data collection systems with real-time indicator dashboards. These three organizations have come together to support the MBSSE in developing a more unified and integrated approach to data systems in Sierra Leone. At this year's UKFIET - The Education and Development Forum, Iman Beoku-Betts and Paul Atherton will be presenting the 'Transforming data systems to support ambitious education reform in Sierra Leone', exploring both what has been done, and what has been learnt from this collaboration. The Shape of Education: #Education is a critical cornerstone of human development but it faces significant challenges worldwide. According to a report by the World Bank some of the pressing issues which need to be attended to include: 1 - #Learning #Crisis: Even before the COVID-19 pandemic, many low- and middle-income countries grappled with low-quality instruction. Shockingly, the learning poverty rate in these countries was 57%—meaning that 6 out of 10 children couldn’t read and comprehend basic texts by age 10. The pandemic exacerbated this crisis, leaving students further behind in mathematics, reading, and other subjects. The impact on future earnings could be substantial, with this generation potentially losing around $21 trillion. 2 - Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE): Despite its critical role, this remains neglected. Nearly two-thirds of countries lack proper legal frameworks for providing free and compulsory pre-primary education. ECCE isn’t just preparation for primary school; it lays the foundation for emotional well-being and lifelong learning—a wise investment for any nation. 3 - Teacher Quality: The supply of #high-#quality teachers is inadequate. In many low- and middle-income countries, teacher training has declined. For instance, in Sub-Saharan Africa, the percentage of trained teachers fell from 84% in 2000 to 69% in 2019. Moreover, while teachers may be formally qualified, they often lack essential #pedagogical training. The shortage is particularly acute for teachers in #science, #technology, #engineering, and #mathematics (#STEM) subjects. 4 - Evidence-Based Policies: Decision-makers often fail to implement #evidence-based or pro-equity policies that establish solid #educational #foundations. These policies are crucial for ensuring #equitable access to quality education for all. Addressing these challenges requires concerted efforts from governments, educators, technology providers and the communities themselves to create a brighter future for students worldwide. The technological challenge has been taken up by a growing number of edtech providers. The ones I'm watching are: Shape Robotics, with their programmable fable robots, 4Cight Inc, with their Intelligent Learning Space, and HANDY AV LIMITED, who are working to create an eco-system whose focus is on providing teachers with the right tools to support positive student outcomes. www.4cight.com
