I am proud and grateful to announce that I have achieved a Level 5 Diploma in Applied Finance after having completed the AmplifyME Investment and Finance Simulation Bootcamp from the 8th of January 2024 - 12th of January 2024 🎉. I would like to thank the University of Strathclyde’s Accounting and Finance Department, Rachel Pooley, the team at AmplifyME : Piers Curran, Will de Lucy, Saif Ali, Anthony Cheung, Emre Ekim, Silvia Magni , their IT team (as Saif mentioned on Friday, who helped facilitate the simulation experience) and everyone who worked behind the scenes to make the simulation bootcamp a success 🙏 !   For an overview of what I learnt during the AmplifyME Investment & Finance bootcamp: 1️⃣ : ReTrader & Asset Management Simulation. - This helped me understand how macroeconomic themes influenced the global market and its volatility and gave me the experience of managing a $20 million portfolio of investments. It's safe to say that I've never managed so much money but that’s not to say I wasn’t *invested* in this simulation (a pun which hopefully made those reading this laugh, otherwise it would make me a laughing*stock* (pun) 😆.) 2️⃣ : Finance Accelerator & Sales and Trading Simulation. - This simulation helped me gauge how to communicate effectively and work on my sales skills and helped in my understanding of what was involved in facilitating trades, making markets all while managing market risk. This was a challenging simulation, but I tried my best so it was smooth *sale*ing (pun).   3️⃣ : Hedge Fund Training. - This involved applying my knowledge of technical analysis and trading strategies gleaned from AmplifyME's pre-learning material on market prices and executing trades from the points of view of a hedge fund and an investment bank.   4️⃣ : Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A) Simulation. - The first half of the day involved completing an Income Statement, Balance Sheet, Cash Flow Statement, and Discounted Cash Flow Statement on an Excel file and making recommendations based on financial ratios whether the company should go ahead with an M&A deal and then in the second half, I learnt how to create a pitch deck based off quantitative material and research.   5️⃣ : IPO Simulation. - We had to work in teams to build a pitch deck for a fictitious company going for an Initial Public Offering. I learnt how to: analyse macro and industry trends, identify investment opportunities, use company financials to value a company, present how the company would use the proceeds, to arrive at the price range per share, how to forecast growth and assess risks. I also got the opportunity to work on soft skills such as communication and teamwork so I would say this was a very well-rounded simulation 😁!   This simulation *Amplify*ed (a pun) my understanding of finance and, paired with the knowledge from my MSc in Quantitative Finance, will be invaluable in my professional life. I look forward to many more opportunities like this in the future!

Modern Portfolio Theory (MPT): At its heart, MPT is about achieving the best possible return for a given level of risk. Simplified, it suggests diversifying your investment portfolio across various assets to reduce risk without sacrificing potential returns. Think of it as not putting all your eggs in one basket but spreading them across several baskets to minimize the loss if one falls. 2. Efficient Market Hypothesis (EMH): EMH proposes that stock prices reflect all available information, making it impossible to consistently achieve higher returns. In simpler terms, it argues that beating the market is largely a matter of luck rather than skill, emphasizing the importance of passive investing strategies like index funds. 3. Behavioral Finance: This theory acknowledges that investors are not always rational and that psychological influences can impact investment decisions. Simplifying this, it’s essential to be aware of emotional biases (like fear of missing out or reluctance to accept losses) that might lead you astray and focus on long-term investment strategies instead. 4. Dividend Discount Model (DDM): DDM values a stock by predicting dividends and discounting them back to their present value. Essentially, it’s like calculating the present worth of all the money you expect to receive from an investment, emphasizing the importance of future cash flows in determining an investment's value today. 5. Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM): CAPM helps in determining the expected return on an investment, considering its risk relative to the market. It simplifies to the idea that the riskier an investment, the higher the expected return should be to make it worthwhile. 6. High Yield Low Risk Model (HYLR): HYLR is typically achieved with a synergistic combination of multi-asset classes of investments to provide investors & fund managers with the ability to move quickly to mitigate national, regional & even local risks while simultaneously achieving higher returns than a single asset class investment would bring. Conclusion: While investment theories can seem daunting, their core principles are grounded in common sense: diversify to manage risk, be wary of market unpredictability, understand the psychological factors at play, value investments based on future benefits, and align expected returns with risk levels. By simplifying these theories, we not only make them more accessible but also empower ourselves with the knowledge to make smarter, more informed investment decisions. Investment zen of the day: A zen teacher once asked his disciple, "Your practice is fit for calm, but is it fit for disturbance?" The same question we have to ask ourselves about our investments: "Your portfolio is fit for calm, but is it fit for disturbance?" When the markets are going up, everybody is happy and no worries seem to be on the horizon. These are the times when we should be worried, though. How can we prepare our capital for crashes in stocks, bonds, gold, or other assets? A future-oriented investment approach helps us here. It thinks in scenarios and what-ifs, building a long-term portfolio that will do well in most if not all market phases, instead of just buying something and hoping for the best. Have you heard about the JSE Investment Challenge? Celebrating 50 years, the JSE Investment Challenge sees over 25 000 participants testing their “share trading skills through an ongoing annual simulated virtual trading programme”. With an imaginary sum of R1 000 000, participants can invest in JSE-listed companies. “Their performance is tracked and measured in a competition against other teams taking part in the Challenge”. Kingswood College entered three teams into the challenge and achieved great results.
