Samsung Electronics UK have announced the winners of the Solve for Tomorrow Next Gen 2024 competition, which encourages young people to use technology to address challenges and risks in their communities. Hundreds of secondary schools across the UK and Ireland signed up to receive free online resources, including an interactive video lesson, to help inspire the next generation of innovators. Students aged 11-15 learned the basics of Design Thinking and received insight into creative STEM careers such as design and marketing. Students were encouraged to enter their tech-for-good ideas into the competition, which was judged by a panel of Samsung employees. Entries included solutions to hate or bullying, med-tech solutions to asthma and using technology to help non-verbal children to communicate using images. These competitions are excellent opportunities to engage in conversation with younger generations and foster a culture of creativity and design. The EPICS in IEEE program recently held its Access and Abilities Competition, challenging university students worldwide to address accessibility issues through engineering projects. Out of 58 proposals, 23 projects were funded, involving over 350 students and 149 IEEE volunteers. Highlights include an adaptive gaming mouse for individuals with upper limb abnormalities, braille signs and automated doors for accessibility in Panama, an assistive device for children with hearing impairments in India, and a self-navigating walking aid for senior citizens in Malaysia. These projects, funded by grants ranging from $1,000 to $10,000, aim to improve the quality of life for people with disabilities. #AccessibilityMatters #InclusiveEngineering
