The ultimate goal of democracy is for people to resolve differences and make decisions peacefully. Teaching students to frame discussions in healthy ways has never been more important. This course helps you take on this challenge by looking at research-based strategies for classroom dialogues, discussions, and debates. Topics we explore: Is a debate—which asks students to confront classmates and change their beliefs in order to win—teaching the right civic skills and dispositions? Is there value infusing classroom dialogues that remove oppositional thinking? How do we learn to value our differences? As well as frameworks and tools for tackling challenging and controversial issues in ways that build relationships and create nuanced understanding. Join us this summer! A moment of vulnerability... Is it okay to share my deep old struggles on national news? As I take a deep breath, I'm reminded of the little girl I once was - a GEP student, expected to have it altogether. But behind the accolades and perfect scores, there was a child grappling with self-doubt and loneliness. You see, being in the top 0.x% academically doesn't shield you from feeling inadequate. If anything, it can make those feelings even more isolating. After all, who would believe that the 'smart kid' struggles too? But here's the beautiful truth I've learned on this journey: our struggles don't define us - they refine us. Those moments of self-doubt? They've blossomed into deep empathy. The fear of not being enough? It's teaching me to celebrate small victories. The loneliness? It's opened my heart to connect with others in their pain. Today, as a business leader, parent, and forever-student of life, I'm grateful for every challenge that's shaped me. They've given me the gift of understanding, the strength to be vulnerable, and the courage to say, "It's okay not to be okay." To anyone out there feeling alone in their struggles - whether you're labeled 'gifted' or not - please know that your worth isn't measured by grades or achievements. You are valued, you are loved, and your struggles are valid. Let's create a world where we celebrate not just brilliant minds, but also kind hearts and resilient spirits. A world where authenticity trumps perfection, and where we lift each other up in our shared humanity. This is my story, told with an open heart. I hope it brings a little warmth, a lot of hope, and the gentle reminder that you're never alone on your journey too. ❤️ Thank you Stephanie Yeo for sharing my story too! #EmbraceYourJourney #AuthenticityMatters #HeartOverAchievements
When I read Crystal Lim-Lange’s first viral post on the Gifted Education Programme (GEP) last week, I knew it would make a good story. Many people have shared their POV since news of the GEP’s revamp was announced at the National Day Rally. But Crystal’s account was startlingly raw and honest. I had heard about some gifted kids being neurodivergent, but here was a no holds barred account. No wonder it resonated with many across social media. I am grateful to Crystal for granting me an interview to share more about her life. You don’t need to be gifted to see her resilience and street smarts, qualities that every parent wants in their child. And isn’t it amazing that the girl who had no friends and frustrated her teachers is now an educator to thousands of people? Thank you, also, to Jean Liu 卢传瑾, Beatrice Liu 刘诗颖 and Karen Soh for sharing their GEP journeys. I’m not sure what your takeaway from this article will be, but for me, it is to continue believing in my children, even if they don’t always fit into the “system”. It appears that my worst fears have been realized: we have made progress in everything yet nothing has changed. -Derrick Bell In this episode of Freedom Friday, Chris, Sharif, and Ish highlight the historical context of Black communities teaching their own children and the need to reclaim that tradition. They emphasize the impact of low expectations and racial objectification on children's ability to learn and the importance of providing culturally relevant and empowering education. The conversation explores the importance of cultural knowledge and background in education, particularly in the context of teaching reading. It highlights the need for teachers to unlearn and question traditional teaching methods and to understand the experiences and potential of their students. The conversation also challenges the notion that a city's low reading proficiency is solely the fault of schools or teachers, and calls for culturally responsive learning that combines cultural knowledge with academic rigor. watch full episode here: youtu.be/sxVCCLxBzp4?si

In School Inc., the late Andrew Coulson, senior fellow of education policy at Cato Institute, takes viewers on a worldwide personal quest for an answer to the question—if you build a better way to teach a subject, why doesn’t the world beat a path to your door, like they do in other industries? The three-part documentary exposes audiences to unfamiliar and often startling realities: the sad fate of Jaime Escalante after the release of the feature film Stand and Deliver; Korean teachers who earn millions of dollars every year; private schools in India that produce excellent results but charge only $5 a month; current U.S. efforts to provide choices and replicate educational excellence; and schools in Chile and Sweden—in which top K-12 teachers and schools have already begun to “scale-up,” reaching large and ever-growing numbers of students. Although sadly we are witnessing a rise in antisemitism, teaching about this topic can make a positive difference in the lives of students. Our recent evaluation study shows that our lessons on contemporary antisemitism help students cultivate empathy and motivate them to take action against antisemitism when they encounter it. What should celebrating our educators look like? Latinx Teachers Fellowship alum Sofia Gonzalez M.Ed., MA knows that being an educator is becoming increasingly difficult. In this Con Ganas We Can blog, Sofia says we must truly celebrate teachers by making big waves of change in policy and access, while regularly recognizing educators for the work, passion, and grit we see in classrooms year after year.
