I had the honor of participating in a symposium organised by Richard Burge and Philip Thomas on behalf of the City of London‘s Lord Mayor Michael Mainelli. The Lord Mayor presented a forward-thinking agenda, on the future of finance, science, and technology as drivers of London’s evolution into a global innovation hub. The focus was on how the City of London can build resilience and capacity to lead in applying finance to cutting-edge science and technology. Lord Mayor Mainelli emphasised the City’s historic role in innovation and problem-solving, advocating a renewed culture of open exchange to drive growth and progress. We discussed various areas including strengthening Science-Tech-Finance linkages, with the proposed creation of a dedicated institution in the City to catalyze these partnerships, scale transformative ideas, and accelerate the path to commercialisation—paving the way for the next generation of global enterprises made in the UK. #Energy emerged as a critical focus area, with several insights: Funding: Energy investment criteria remains rigorous, with mainstream investors favouring innovation that is 3rd party validated, high TRL’s or revenue generating - a clear obstacle for commercialisation Market Advantage: For the UK to lead in Energy a more vigorous and long term approach is needed. University Spin-Outs: Academic spin-outs are seen as a real potential to become global leaders- making continued university affiliation a valuable asset. The symposium reinforced the City’s unique role as a driver of sustainable global innovation. However, unlocking this potential requires a long-term, collaborative strategy that aligns resources, ideas, and expertise

College Station Explores Transformational Growth The City of College Station City Council recently awarded Hunden Partners, led by Rob(in) Hunden, a contract to study the feasibility of a convention center. This marks a pivotal moment for the city as it considers the financial and economic implications to expand its convention center, which could increase the capacity to attract and host large-scale events, enhancing College Station's position as a destination. The study will unfold in two phases. The first will focus on gathering critical data and insights through stakeholder engagement, market analysis, and historical trends. The second phase, contingent on council approval, will delve deeper into evaluating potential sites, financial strategies, and the projected economic and community impact of such a development. ADAPTIVE RE-USE AT ITS BEST: I was privileged to get a sneak peek at the stunning Edinburgh Futures Institute during the final stages of construction last year. A scheme Project Managed by our brilliant Edinburgh office at AtkinsRéalis. The integration of old and new really is divine. As our demands of our built assets change at an increasing rate, adaptive re-use, although not for the faint-hearted, can be a brilliant way to turn challenge into opportunity, whilst meeting the carbon aspirations of the future. “The upfront embodied carbon impact of the project was 361kgCO2e/m2 GIA and the whole life carbon was 603kgCO2e/m2 GIA. The former beats the current best practice LETI target for an educational building, and the latter meets current best practice standards. The limits for the new Net Zero Carbon Building Standard have since been published and are much more nuanced as, unlike LETI, it includes targets for new build and retrofit projects. If benchmarked against the NZCBS limits for a higher education retrofit project, it would meet the target for a project starting onsite in 2029.” #retrofit Terry Stocks Daniel Lockwood MRICS
