This is the concluding paragraph of an opinion piece I recently produced for the CHME Newsletter. Should anyone wish to receive the full piece please email me on sdball16@gmail.com The time for debating the student recruitment problems of Hospitality Management Education (HME) and the recruitment of qualified management to the hospitality industry is over. Both parties need to urgently recognise the value of the symbiotic relationship between themselves related to attracting management students and graduates. The need for a concerted effort, action and delivery is urgent. HME and industry must continue to successfully collaborate on elements of programme design and operation but collaboration needs to be extended to increase demand for HM programmes given declining enrolments and given the accentuated need for qualified hospitality managers. The challenge is for parties to help one another to achieve the greatest success.

Self-accreditation an enabler for innovation – comment by CEO Jenny Dodd Minister O’Connor’s speech last Wednesday at the extremely successful TDA Convention 2024 in Sydney really hit the mark. Not only did Minister O’Connor highlight the important policy directions that have placed TAFE back at the heart, such as 70% of funding, fee-free TAFE and TAFE Centres of Excellence, he announced an essential policy that will be an enabler for innovation. Minister O’Connor said: “Today I am very pleased to announce that the government will scope and pilot ASQA delegating its course accreditation function to selected TAFEs in the coming 12 months. I know that TAFEs have been advocating for this for some time and the government appreciated the thoughtful advice of the Universities Accord Panel in recommending it. The Albanese Government recognises that TAFES play a special and important role in the delivery of VET in a sector that is very diverse with varying levels of maturity across a cohort of more than 4,000 providers. This is another important example of how we are moving away from a one size fits all approach to the VET sector, including with respect to regulation.” Read more https://lnkd.in/gCWS5a52

With so much 'bad news' on the state of hospitality education, this article and the scenarios it outlines provide potential antidotes. It is also realistic in those assumptions of what may or may not be achievable! Worth reading the full paper. https://lnkd.in/exM6Zhf8

The new Standards will be enacted 1.1.25; coming into full regulatory effect 1.7.25 Looking forward to reading the: - Standards - Credential Policy - Compliance requirements
Skills Ministers have met today (20.9.24) and have endorsed the revised Standards which will be released next week (week beginning 23.9.24) ✅ Great to get some movement on the issue ❌ Not so great given Independent Tertiary Education Council Australia's (ITECA) call for further consultation on what will soon become the mandatory requirements for ongoing registration ❌ Not so great given many in the sector hold concern for wording as presented in the last draft document As the document comes to hand, we'll post more https://lnkd.in/guCQr3wW

Will the new Skills England impact on you? Most of you will know that the Government’s plan to create Skills England was announced at the recent King’s Speech. The legislation is unlikely to be passed before Spring 2025. The plan is that Skills England will operate within a philosophy of partnership with employers at the centre. The intention is for Skills England is to convene employers, unions, education and training providers, and experts with national government to: · Develop a single picture of national and local skills needs · Work with industry, the Migration Advisory Committee, unions and the Industrial Strategy Council to build and maintain a comprehensive assessment of current and future skills needs. This will also inform the Department for Education’s policy priorities. · Identify the training for which the Growth and Skills Levy will be accessible - this includes consulting on (and maintaining a list of) levy-eligible training to ensure value for money · Guarantee the mix of government-funded training available to learners and employers aligns with skills needs. · Ensure that the national and regional skills systems are meeting skills needs and are aligned to local and regional vacancy data while also building a robust evidence base. · Partner with mayoral combined authorities and other key stakeholders to identify system issues · Provide advice to Government, leading to a more coherent system. Overall, the positive impact of Skills England will be the opportunity to bring the complex area of training and qualifications into a single entity especially if employers remain at the centre. #training #apprentceships #earlyyears #skills #change
