It is that time of year again when high school seniors and their parents are thinking of their post high school education. Regardless of the their educational choices, the cost is going to be enormous. High School Seniors are actively applying for scholarship help in their communities. Many community service organizations offer scholarships. And, in many cases, those that excel in their high school studies and on the ACT & SAT exams usually have the inside track to receiving those scholarships. Here is a Rotary club in Texas that takes a slightly different approach to selecting students for the scholarships they offer. First of all, to qualify, students need to belong to their club sponsored Intereact Club. Why, because Interact provides the student experience that reinforces Rotary's focus on service to others, promoting integrity, advancing world understanding, goodwill, and peace as student leaders. The other unique feature of their scholaship is the post high school educational institution the students choose to attend can include 4 year programs, 2 year programs and trade schools. They want students to choose a school that will advance their chosen vocation. Check out the story below. This clubs scholarship is intended for Senior Interact club members at Fred Moore High School and Lake Dallas High School in Denton and Lake Dallas, Texas. As a Rotarian in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, my hope is that more organizations that award scholarships adopt a similar approach to selecting their scholarship recipients.

Cedar Hill School Visit Like all teaching and leadership roles in modern day public education systems, the role of Superintendent has transformed beyond providing leadership, developing policy, and managing facilities, and the day-to-day operations, to one of ensuring that our students academically, socially and emotionally ready their futures, not our past. Learning, leading, and governing alongside Boards of Education, while also engaging with and alongside respective communities, has become commonplace within the Superintendency. As CEO/Superintendent of Gwinnett County Public Schools, our country’s 11th largest school district, that also resides in the 5th most diverse county in the nation, I am keenly aware of the importance of visiting our school classrooms, and extracurricular program offerings to observe, listen to, and learn from our outstanding Teachers, Students, Principals, Assistant Principals, Paraprofessionals, Counselors, Coaches, Custodians, and Cafeteria Staff, on both a regular, and unannounced basis. My sole purpose in visiting our schools is to develop relationships, to continue looking at, listening to, and learning about the successes and satisfying stories, as well as the opportunities and obstacles that may prevent us from achieving our goals sooner rather than later. As California continues to move towards fully expanding Universal #TransitionalKindergarten (#UTK) by 2026, a major part of this effort is recruiting candidates and preparing the workforce. While much of the focus is on ensuring teachers have the required Multiple Subject credential and 24 units of #EarlyChildhoodEducation and/or #ChildDevelopment for lead TK teachers, some Institutions of Higher Education (IHEs) in California are engaged in complementary efforts aimed at preparing this workforce by way of professional learning. One example is the UTK Leadership Initiative created by the 21st Century California School Leadership Academy (21CSLA) State Center – a collaboration between UC Berkeley School of Education, the UCLA School of Education, and the California Subject Matter Project.
