Certified Life Coach | Advocate for Neurodivergent Learners | Founder of Puzzle Box Academy, Kaleidoscope Interventions, Legacy High School, & Bridge to Tomorrow | TEDx Speaker | Champion of Quantum-Inspired Education
After our last episode on IEPs, we received nationwide feedback. This feedback underscores the nationwide need for ensuring that every student, regardless of their neurodiversity or learning profile, receives appropriate support and advocacy within the education system. In the part 2 of our series on IEPs on The Purple Couch Podcast by Puzzle Box Academy , we delved into the legal obligations of public schools and the importance of a team approach in crafting effective IEPs. One critical aspect we discussed was the challenge many parents face when services are proposed to be removed due to perceived lack of progress. Rather than cutting services, our discussion emphasized the need to reassess and add support where necessary. Advocacy is key, not just for parents but also for educators, therapists, and caregivers involved in a child's academic journey. Remember, an IEP meeting isn't just about the school board and their representatives. Parents have the right to bring any individual who impacts their child's academic growth, whether it's a caregiver, therapist, or even a personal advocate. Together, as a team, we can ensure that every child receives the support they need to thrive. For a deeper dive into the legalities, challenges, and collaborative strategies surrounding IEPs, watch the full episode through the link below. ➡️ https://lnkd.in/e7QpXXkv #education #specialeducation #individualizededucationplans

This Spring, I embarked on a Texas School Tour that included author-led general assembly presentations, roundtable discussions, and one-on-one student interviews. The goal of the “HOO Are You?” Spring 2024 School Tour: to connect to today’s youth through real conversations about mental health. The result: interviews and videos capturing real feedback, straight from students. Plus, a Yearbook filled with fun photos. The school tour was inspired by the Loodor Tales book series, which launched with Amazon bestsellers, The Land of the Pines, and sequel The Land of the Strays. The third book in the series is currently in development. The series is designed to instill self-worth and support mental health, having been hailed by Kirkus Reviews, Publishers Weekly, InStyle, among many others. We all seek connection. Through the “HOO Are You?” School Tours, I address four pillars that form the foundation for connection, to both ourselves and others: self-worth, existence, empathy, and kindness. Applying these pillars, I engage students in discussions regarding mental health, social media, empathy, and how we can all contribute to a kinder world. I am kicking off coverage with a Tour Trailer to share a little about the inspiration behind the series. Starting next week, I will release student features to spotlight elementary, junior high, and high school student roundtable chats. The Spring 2024 tour was the result of countless hours of behind-the-scenes work and an ongoing commitment to kids of all ages. I am driven to make a difference. Visit www.loodor.com SCHOOL TOUR Page to learn more. The Loodor Tales Series delivers award-winning, original IP for a multi-platform approach to the development of content across different media channels. I coach neurodiverse adults + students to maximize their success + abilities. | Educator | RBT Certified | Special Needs Endorsement
Why would you want to work with kids who have special needs? It's a question I've gotten more than once in my 15 years doing it. My answer is simple: Because the system is broken and it needs people to fix it. Here's the problem: We send our kids to school to learn, but there is a schism. It's not the teacher's fault. It's not the parent's fault. Here are some of the issues that we are dealing with. →Teacher's are not equipped with the latest techniques. → Parent's are not aware of all of the resources available. →Not all options are explored for the least restrictive environment. I used to be a huge proponent of public education. My parent's were public school teachers. I was a public school teacher. I thought it worked, but there are so many barriers. Not limited to the "one-size-fits-all" policies that prevent learning. The system is set up for those who have the natural ability to excel in class. Where does this leave the neurodivergent and special needs kids? They are put in a classroom - somewhere in the back of the school - and given assignments that are not rigorous. Or they're put in classrooms with 34 other children and it's sink or swim. IT DOES NOT HAVE TO BE THIS WAY. As a parent, you are already frustrated. In some cases, it's all you can do to get them to get in the car to get to school. Getting a special needs child groomed and dressed is often a day's work before the bell even rings. The good news is there are things you can do to help. That's why I'm here. On LinkedIn. (Plus, my fiancé Holly Crawshaw made me start this page.) I want to help teachers, parents, and friends of kids with special needs bridge the gap. >>What's one question you have about student with special needs? = I'm Andrew. The kids call me Mr. J. I coach parents of students who are neurodivergent an/or have special needs to maximize their educational experience. Find my Featured section for: >>A free discovery call >>A coaching call
