Reimagine America Schools and CityAge, in association with the Siegel Family Endowment, brought both national and local Atlanta leaders together on Dec. 8, to discover how American neighborhoods can become more complete through a focus on equity, community, education, and work. Nearly 300 people attended the digital event to hear from Atlanta school superintendents, local foundations, and other experts. Neighborhoods where digital tools, quality housing, and other basic needs are easily accessible, and where social, physical, and digital infrastructure are integrated, are the ones that set students up for success, according to these experts. It all begins with a long range plan and vision, but the most valuable ingrediant for success is leadership and commitment to considering student needs first as a guiding principle throughout the process. #studentsfirst #educationalexperience #longrangeplan #schooldesign #dlrgroup
Over the course of four years, Barrington 220 School District in Illinois has dedicated its efforts to enhancing the educational experience through ambitious bond projects. This involves improvements across 12 schools including one high school, two middle schools, eight elementary schools, and an early education center. This expansion addresses the growing enrollment needs, marking the end of a decade-long reliance on temporary portable classrooms. Students have the freedom to choose where they work thanks to seamless connections between main learning spaces, adjacent breakout areas, and collaborative corridors. Here's the story behind our work on all twelve facilities: https://lnkd.in/gTKArFh6 #K12 #Design #BarringtonSchoolDistrict220 #Barrington #EducationDesign

Our city would benefit greatly by more formally engaging our students, both high school and university/college, because they are allowed to envision our future (as they'll be living it). The students and faculties at SDUSD, UCSD, SDSU, USD, UCSM, Palomar, Sweetwater, and City College all have the energy and ability to bring big ideas to the future of San Diego... that they can champion to build in the future. It's a powerful source of innovation that is being left on the table when discussing our long-standing housing, homeless, and climatic crises. How? Invite them to lead the vision plans for our community plan updates, our historical resources reforms, and housing action plan 3.0.

In December 2023, I was invited by Courtney Christensen from Kansas City Public Library to give a keynote to open their 150th anniversary celebrations. In January I learned that ART IN THE LOOP FOUNDATION, the public art program for #KansasCity run by Downtown Council of Kansas City, had been so inspired by the talk that they had chosen #convivencia as the theme for their public art summer with KC STREETCAR AUTHORITY. This is the impact that I hoped to see from my research. In my latest newsletter, Ann Holliday and Edwing Mendez talk about how the capability of #coexistence transformed into more than 20 performances and installations. I find this story of Kansas City so inspiring. The big takeaways from it are: 1. There is no greater tool for communicating values than #publicart. 2. Public authorities have power and should use their power on how public spaces are used as a platform for the arts. 3. The biggest investments in the arts are not done by growing the cultural budget but incorporating the arts into public infrastructure. 4. Even when working on serious subjects, like downturn revitalization, do not forget play and wonder. Read the entire article here: https://lnkd.in/e6P3Y-wc

Rebuilding Hope: A Tale of Resilience and Recovery In the wake of adversity, the spirit of community shines brightest. At SS Simon & Jude CE Primary School in Great Lever, Bolton, a devastating fire threatened to dim the futures of 554 bright young minds. But from the ashes emerged a remarkable story of resilience and renewal. Portable Offices were proud to provide a suitable and timely solution, answering the call for swift action. Our mission: to restore not just buildings, but the very heartbeat of education within the local community. With urgency and unwavering determination, we embarked on a journey to create an education village that would serve as a testament to the power of unity in the face of adversity. In just five weeks, 73 buildings rose from the ground, a testament to the dedication and expertise of the team. From modular classrooms to essential facilities such as offices, toilets, and a canteen, every aspect was meticulously planned and executed with precision. But our work extended beyond the mere construction of structures. We became partners in the school's journey to recovery, working hand in hand with a team of around 30 individuals to ensure every detail was attended to with care. From rapid groundworks to the creation of a new access road, every challenge was met head-on, with a comined commitment to excellence that never wavered. The result? A thriving education village, born from the ashes of tragedy, where students were once again pursuing their dreams and teachers were back in class inspiring after only 14 weeks. But more than bricks and mortar, it stands as a testament to the power of resilience, community, and the unwavering spirit of education. If your school or business is facing its own challenges, know that our team are hear to help you find the best solution for your needs. Together, we can turn adversity into triumph and pave the way for brighter futures. 🌟 As my Urban and Community Planning master's program at the Maryland School of Architecture, Planning & Preservation approaches its conclusion, I'm excited to reflect on a recent impactful experience. 🎓✨ At a community meeting in Lakeland, College Park, I had the privilege to present, along with other colleagues, the findings of our Community Planning Studio class. In this dynamic class, we delved into real-world challenges, applying the #scenarioplanning concept to address community planning issues related to #housing and land use, #community infrastructure, and #climatechange. The meeting was a culmination of our fall semester efforts, focusing on #restorativejustice for the black communities of Lakeland. 🏡 Moreover, this experience went beyond academic exploration. We were able to engage and create meaningful human connections with the community members, understanding their perspectives and needs intimately. This connection allowed me to experience firsthand the profound impact of urban planning on communities and my mission as a planner and architect. 💬 Being able to actively contribute to discussions on such a crucial topic and witness the tangible impact of our research has been incredibly rewarding. It's a testament to the effectiveness of U.S. education in fostering practical skills and preparing students for the complexities of real-world scenarios. 📚💡 Here's to more opportunities to create positive change in the coming months! 🤝 For more information on the project, read the article: https://lnkd.in/ew3MiHnk #GraduateJourney #CommunityPlanning #RestorativeJustice #USeducation #HandsOnLearning

What story is being sold about Denver? Ednium started the Denver Deep Dive because we learned that alumni weren’t aware or have access to the systems that help run our city. For nine months, we engaged with the community and learned how Denver's systems are interconnected. The Denver Deep Dive stood out by taking participants to unique city locations: The Denver City & County Building, Comal Heritage (a local food incubator), the CSU Spur Campus, Moline at Stapleton Apartments (an affordable housing community), the Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce Building, Manual High School, and Gary Community Ventures. We covered nine topics: 1️⃣ Denver’s History 2️⃣ Education 3️⃣ Economic Development 4️⃣ Housing 5️⃣ Environment 6️⃣ Transportation 7️⃣ Gastronomy 8️⃣ City Politics 9️⃣ Arts & Culture We learned the importance of curiosity and looking beyond the surface of the stories about Denver. Before the modern Denver we know today, indigenous people lived on this land. The phrase, “We did not cross the border, the border crossed us,” reflects how people became Americans overnight by the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo after the Mexican-American War. In our city politics session we discovered the feedback gap between community needs and the people whose job it is to address and solve those needs. In our housing session, it was shocking to hear that originally HOAs were created to upkeep the image of a residential community. City residents are legally obligated to pay HOA dues, but overtime HOAs have become a burdensome fee rather than providing tangible value to residents. We also learned that affordable housing can be built to match the quality of other apartment complexes. Thank you to everyone who participated in our first Denver Deep Dive. Your curiosity made this program a success! Thank you to all the guest speakers for sharing valuable lessons. We envision a future where homegrown talent holds leadership roles throughout the city. With the Denver Deep Dive, we are one step closer to that future. #EdniumAlumni #EducationLeadership #HomegrownTalent #HomegrownAwards
