Today, I was honored to speak as a panelist during interchange 24 conference prepared by the British Council (a conference for Commonwealth Scholars and Alumini) on the topic "Inclusive Societies – Cultural Diversity (Cultural Competence in Education: Integrating Diverse Perspectives into the Curriculum)". It was a great reminder of how important it is for educators to strive and be willing to go the extra mile to employ strategies that help ensure students from diverse cultural backgrounds feel valued and respected in a classroom. My reflections: 1. Know your learners before designing! Be willing to invest time to design empathy maps, learner journeys, learner profiles,etc to understand who you are designing for. 2. Create inclusive learning environments.. Put in some time to set ground rules and norms to promote respect and empathy in a classroom. 3. Intentionally recruit a team of curriculum designers with diverse backgrounds and representation needed ensure materials are relevant to who you are designing for. In discussions about a broad diverse and culturally rich curriculum, colleagues often tell me that they aren’t sure how to make sure that diversity is done properly. Most schools know that diversity is important but often aren’t sure where to start or how to do it well. While there are resources available, they tend to be scattered, take time to synthesise and are often missing the rationale for this work. The ‘Leading the Diverse Curriculum’ course has been prepared by Hannah Wilson and Bennie Kara, co-founders of #DiverseEd. It is a six part, online, self-paced course with live check-ins to help schools get this element of the curriculum right from first principles. Suport for leading the diverse curriculum Most people agree that diversity in the curriculum is a good idea and there’s plenty of information available about general diversity work. In fact, many schools and trusts appointing colleagues with responsibility for DEI. However, what has been missing has been support specifically for leading and then development of diversity in the curriculum. The phrase ‘diversity in the curriculum’ usually applies to the concept of a curriculum that is inclusive of the experiences and histories of those with protected characteristics. It often seeks to erase systemic barriers in our society through fairer and more equitable distribution of curriculum content. It serves to allow young people to think more critically about how knowledge is formed and how it comes to be valued. Diverse Educators specialists Hannah Wilson FCCT FRSA ACC and Bennie Kara were being increasingly asked by colleagues in schools about how to really dive into the principles and processes to achieve a diverse curriculum. They were also being asked for advice on the leadership aspects of leading a diverse curriculum. As a result, they developed Leading the Diverse Curriculum programme.
