🔄 How Reverse Psychology Worked on My Disruptive Student I have a very disruptive student who struggles to focus for more than a minute and loves talking. I’ve tried various techniques like ignoring his behaviour, praising well-behaved students, and repeatedly giving instructions until he completes his work. Last week, I decided to experiment with reverse psychology. During a discussion about the answers to a comprehension text, he was excitedly talking about his favourite video game. I asked him, "Why don't you engage in the class discussion instead? Oh, you don’t know the answers, right? It's okay then, I understand." That question seemed to touch his ego. He immediately responded, "I know the answers," and started participating in the discussion. Fast forward to yesterday’s lesson, he actively participated in the discussion without any prompting from me. He even answered difficult questions and said, "Now, I'm cooking!" (which is Gen Alpha/ Gen-Z slang for "It’s my time to shine now.") This experience reinforced the importance of understanding and positively influencing student behaviour. Sometimes, a subtle shift in approach, like reverse psychology, can make a significant impact on student engagement and confidence. #teacher #teaching #classroommanagement

Not gonna lie- I'm really proud of this study! This is the first empirical study I conducted in my own lab with a wonderful student as my co-author, Emily Linehan. We have been working on a line of studies evaluating some topics that have been studied within cognitive psychology and education. Our study takes some concepts and brings them into a behavior analytic lens. We have applied B.F. Skinner's analysis of problem solving to notetaking and, as a result, lots of learning occurs in a VERY short time! AND- we used some tools I've come to appreciate in practice including video modeling and performance feedback. Please check it out! https://lnkd.in/gyjZEzHX

Match a student’s thinking style to their teacher’s style? No. If there is a Cognitive Gap between the student and the teacher then both need to adopt a coping strategy to 'move' towards each other i.e. they both become Bridgers. Matching defeats the principle of the value of Cognitive Diversity. In the sales arena some 'experts' suggest that the seller has to adopt the style of the buyer. Totally wrong. Sycophantic. The seller sees buyer behaviour not buyer personality, Rather than 'type spot' engage in a conversation about how you (the seller) and the buyer prefer to work and then agree the 'rules of engagement' which will also reveal some belief systems and values (Cognitive Affect). If you want to have a 'meeting' to discuss Personality and its impact on buyer and seller behaviour then call me, Jamie Johnson, on 07831 331854.
Do you wonder with we need to match a student’s thinking style to their teacher’s style? Would this help the student achieve more? Is there a better ‘thinking style’ for a teacher to have, to gain engagement with their students? I am sharing with you the story of two successful Psychology professors. They each have very different teaching styles… but is method one necessarily better or more successful than the other? One of the professors invites spontaneous discussion and questions from their students, while the other prefers to follow a structured lesson plan. So, what does this tell us about each professor’s “problem-solving style” – and what impact might it have on the student’s learning experience? I am keen to hear from any lecturers, professors or academics in my network… are you more like Dr Foster or Dr Turner? #teachingstyle #thinkingstyle #psychology #lecturers

Sharing for those interested in personal growth and intellectual development. The "Introduction to Psychology" course offered by Yale University on Coursera, taught by the brilliant Paul Bloom is a must. This course has been an enlightening journey into the fundamentals of psychology, and I wanted to highlight a few key takeaways: 1. Critical Thinking: The course provided a deep dive into how cognitive biases affect our judgments and decisions. Understanding these biases helps in developing more objective and rational thinking processes. 2. Problem Solving: I gained insights into various problem-solving techniques rooted in psychological research. The course emphasized strategies for approaching complex problems with systematic analysis and evidence-based solutions. 3. Analytical Thinking: The exploration of cognitive processes highlighted the importance of analytical thinking. I learned how to dissect and evaluate information critically, leading to more accurate conclusions and better decision-making. 4. Abstract Thinking: The course covered how abstract thinking enables us to grasp complex concepts and theories. This skill is crucial for understanding theoretical frameworks and applying them to real-world scenarios. 5. Reasoning: I delved into the mechanisms of reasoning and how it underpins our ability to form logical arguments and make sound judgments. The course highlighted different reasoning approaches and their implications for everyday decision-making. 6. Understanding Human Behavior: The course provided deep insights into why we think and act the way we do, exploring concepts like cognitive biases and the psychology of decision-making. 7. The Science of Happiness: I learned about the factors that contribute to human happiness and well-being, and how psychological research can inform practices to enhance our overall quality of life. 8. Development and Learning: The course covered the stages of human development, from infancy through adulthood, emphasizing how our experiences shape our cognitive and emotional growth. 9. The Power of Perception: I gained a greater appreciation for how our perceptions and interpretations of the world influence our actions and interactions. I’m excited to apply these insights to both my professional and personal life. A big thank you to Paul Bloom and the Yale team for such an engaging and thought-provoking course! #Psychology #LifelongLearning #Yale #Coursera #PersonalGrowth
