Talk about jumping straight into the deep end after the Christmas break - we are back pushing the boundaries of the latest #ai technology. Carl Chalmers actually raises some very interesting points. Over the last couple of months, we have witnessed an increased use of #generativeai in business processes which is both good and bad. Many are calling themselves #ai experts, which they are not in many cases - they are service uses of an #ai application that is not under their control or regulated by the organisation. There have been terrible examples of poor #promptengineering as well as #promptengineering misuse. Many of these systems have been trained on vast amounts of data (good, bad, biased, and discriminative). Some have safeguards but these can be easily circumnavigated in many AI service offerings. #retrievalaugmentedgeneration is an excellent way to overcome many of these issues as the information is directly under the control of the organisation, which does require development and AI expertise to implement, but it is well worth the investment. Following on from our ‘Falcon 7b Liverpool John Moores University student assistant’ myself and Paul Fergus have extended its functionality using #retrievalaugmentedgeneration (RAG). RAG is an amazing concept that allows #llms to access to new information without #finetuning. Here we created a fictitious course (and professor) to test the implementation. The response is generated by drawing information form a local data store and trained capabilities of the #llm. This approach is fundamentally important for organisations as #ai service users are constrained by the biases, hallucinations and uncitable information provided by pay per use models which could be damaging to both users and organisations.

Anyone who is in Education, and using GenAI to 'innovate' - but leaves the 'regulation' bit to others or is challenged to embrace it - please have a think about future legislation, or at least your brand reputation. If Universities, TAFEs and Schools don't balance innovation and regulation, imagine our students in accredited courses using AI to help them negotiate assessments, whilst being given advice based on data like this... ! https://lnkd.in/gFpmcszU #education #genai #innovation
