We always look forward to Edutopia’s year-end review of the most significant education studies of the year. There is a lot to learn here from the importance of being a “warm demander” in the classroom, to the impact of AI on students’ long-term learning, to the impact of linguistically diverse classrooms. It can be tempting to dive right in and implement something fresh and exciting. However, in our work with schools around the country, we have noticed that the most long-lasting and significant changes come from strategies that are grounded in the school’s data-driven priorities and instructional vision. Visit Maureen Sigler and me at MKS Education Partners to learn more about the questions we ask before implementing any new strategy: https://lnkd.in/e2Bq8_nt https://lnkd.in/eutuvyPK

I loved reading about these studies! Check them out! I especially liked: #10 about the Science of Reading A 2024 analysis of 16 studies found the optimal cumulative amount of phonemic awareness instruction, but at the same time reminds us that there is no one-size-fits-all approach and that students come with different levels of proficiency. It is the professional teacher's job to determine and plan instruction that supports all students where they are at. #6 about Peer-to-peer teaching A 2024 study sought to examine the impact of peer-to-peer teaching on recall and transfer of content. They found that students who taught their peers had higher levels of anxiety, but significantly outperformed the restudy group and used more "elaborative statements." "Researchers hypothesized that the presence of classmates may activate parts of the brain attuned to peer feedback."

We simply are not Frankenstein monsters. We tend to focus on small mechanisms and parts and pieces of knowledge. Instead, focus on the whole person, not the Frankenstein monster with all the little pieces. Affective neuroscience teaches us new perspectives for understanding and appreciating the importance of the whole person in the educational context. https://lnkd.in/gwH2Rb3Y
