At a recent conference in Montreal, access to justice advocates emphasized the importance of a people-centered approach, advocating for the inclusion and elevation of the voices of those directly experiencing the justice system. Despite calls for user-focused research, most studies still prioritize the perspectives of legal professionals, which may not fully capture the needs of justice system users. The conference also highlighted the need for a balanced approach that includes both quantitative and qualitative research to understand the real impact of access to justice initiatives. The first step towards justice is accountability: either taking ownership of it or being held to it. Without accountability, the foundation of justice is unstable and doomed to crumble. One cannot claim to fight for justice if not also willing to and are actively practicing radical accountability. Wait.
