I received my offical badge showing that I wrapped up a productive two days at the TRIO Training: Absolute Priority! This program provided valuable insights into supporting students with: Financial Aid: Understanding the complexities of financial aid options will empower me to better guide students through the application process. Admissions: Staying current on admissions policies and procedures ensures students can navigate the application journey with confidence. Financial Literacy: Equipping students with financial literacy skills sets them up for success not only in college but throughout their lives. Financial Education Research Project/Survey by Bank On Boston Interns, Fall 2023 (unreleased until now).. Although I am no longer the Bank On Boston Senior Program Manager in The Mayor's Office of Financial Empowerment, I wanted to make sure that last fall's findings, and the needs of those students don't go unnoticed. The research project assessed the correlations of undergraduate students' financial literacy by low socio-economic status (an individual’s position on a social and economic scale, determined by the individuals’ income, education level, and types of occupations) vs non-low SES students. Every Summer parents are looking for fun and meaningful things to engage their kids in, till school re-opens. This summer, engaging the youth in financial literacy feels very enticing. I have observed that teaching financial literacy early on is crucial for developing good financial habits and a healthy relationship with money. The key principles of financial literacy include; earning, saving, investing, protecting, spending, and borrowing. That provide a solid foundation for kids to understand how to manage their finances effectively. By learning these principles, kids can develop essential skills such as: 1. Budgeting and prioritizing expenses 2. Setting financial goals and working towards them 3. Making smart financial decisions 4. Avoiding debt and building credit 5. Building wealth and securing their financial future Introducing these concepts in an age-appropriate manner can set kids up for long-term financial success and stability. Starting early can make a significant difference! It’s Money Monday and we are approaching the time of year of graduations, transitions, and fresh starts. During the month of May, we will focus on money tips for the young people in your lives who are making these transitions – what is a piece of money wisdom you wish you had been given when you graduated or went into the work force? According to the National Center for Education Statistics*, there will be around 3.5 million high school graduates in the United States. Some of these graduations will go to college or trade school and some will end up in the work force.
