The beauty and variety of grown foods 😍 I love the ethos of this #futurefoods campaign from WWF Switzerland. It is such a good match for our ethos at Oh So Wholesome, though we know we have a long way to go. WWF have highlighted 30 foods in this stunning poster that are: 🕺 Nutrient rich 🌍 Lower environmental impact 🗺 Can be grown locally We're working to make it easier to eat a much wider variety of plants (and mushrooms), nutrient rich and showcasing how great these foods can taste. It's a big ambition of ours to support locally grown crops as we develop. There's a WWF report with more details about these foods and a bank of recipe suggestions. 🌱🌍 Securing Hawaii's Food Future: Grow/Buy/Eat Local 🌊🍍 Did you know that food could be the biggest force of change to impact both human health and climate change? In this recent NYT opinion piece, David Wallace-Wells discusses the vulnerabilities of our global food system in the face of climate change. We all *collectively gasp* to see avocados added to the list of endangered foods, while our grocery store shelves are still packed with exotic imported fruits like mangoes and avocados. Many of the avocados sold in Hawaii are imported! Rather than sourced locally where they grow in abundance. Hawaii's dependence on imported goods mirrors this global vulnerability on a small scale. We must recognize the fragility beneath this abundance of imported produce. Regenuary by Robert-John van Exter January is often a month to reflect, and recharge for the year ahead and most often it is the most successful month when it comes to New Year’s resolutions. Abstaining from alcohol and avoiding meat and other animal products are well-known and associated with the first month of the year. It requires a healthy dose of dedication to get through the month, pleasing the tastebuds and avoiding the ultra-processed vegan options on the supermarket shelves. In the spirit of reflection, it is good to question whether one month of vegan eating is the solution for our planet and our bodies. Many products are produced in warmer climates and have to be transported to us, carrying a large carbon backpack. #Regenuary was born in 2020 as a reaction to Veganuary to raise awareness of how and where we source our food. The word Regenuary stems from #regenerativefarming, where methods are used to restore the soil, improve #biodiversity, and aid an ecosystem. It is also intended to relieve the stigma that consuming animal products is bad for the planet. A comparison was made between the production of a Mexican avocado and a UK grass-fed piece of beef. The benefit for planet Earth proved to be in the latter.
