Anyone who is involved in designing with SIPSs would do well to get a copy of this recently published book by Hugh Morrison, an ex colleague from my Anthony Hunt Associates days. Incidentally, I proofread the book for Hugh last summer, and can highly recommend it: https://lnkd.in/e3cy7g3U #SIPs #StructuralDesign #TimberConstruction #SustainableDesign #HouseDesign
To give a shout out to my other business... Chris Jarvis & the whole JAM Structural Design team have been busy [very very busy] recently on a whole host of interesting and unusual projects. These range from: - a new home made from straw bale SIPs, - to a sensitive resoration and extension of a beautiful mid-century modern home - to an extension and retrofit of a 1990s home to make it warmer and full accessible for it's disabled owner. Find out more in their latest blog: https://lnkd.in/eU8N72t4 And if you've got an interesting project you need some structural support please reach out to Chris on 0114 442 0232 or here on LinkedIn #NotesFromASmallPractice #ResidentialArchitecture #Architecture

Architects know that the materials used in constructing a building can have a significant impact on the overall look and feel of the design. That's why Corten steel is becoming increasingly popular for commercial buildings. This eco-friendly material can handle harsh conditions, making it a reliable choice. Additionally, Corten steel is aesthetically pleasing, adding a unique touch to any project. #metalsiding #metalfabrication #metalcladding #roofers #contractors #architects #designers #builders #commercialconstruction #construction #cortensteel #cortencladding #ecofriendly #sustainability #ecofriendly #sustainability

In my journey as an architect, I have been deeply immersed in the intricate dance of design and construction, breathing life into the visions of my clients' dream buildings. Whether it be the meticulous renovation of existing structures or the grandeur of erecting brand new edifices, I have devoted myself to every step of the process with unwavering passion. At the helm of the design process, I have orchestrated a symphony of creativity and practicality, harnessing the latest technologies to craft both exquisite interiors and striking exteriors. Each blueprint bears the imprint of my dedication to marrying aesthetic brilliance with functional excellence, ensuring that every space is not only visually captivating but also harmoniously functional. Yet, my role extends far beyond the realm of design alone. With a keen eye for detail and a profound understanding of the mechanics of construction, I have delved into the intricacies of electrical and plumbing systems, weaving them seamlessly into the fabric of our architectural marvels. And when faced with the need for substantial renovation, I approach the task of demolition with a strategic finesse, navigating the delicate balance between preserving the essence of the structure and ushering in transformative change. But perhaps what truly ignites the flames of my passion is the ceaseless quest for growth and innovation. In a field where stagnation is synonymous with regression, I embrace each opportunity to learn new skills and acquaint myself with emerging technologies. It is this relentless pursuit of excellence that propels me forward, ensuring that I remain not just relevant, but indispensable in the ever-evolving landscape of architecture. For me, architecture is not merely a profession; it is a calling—a testament to my unwavering commitment to the art of creation and the pursuit of excellence. With every project, I strive not only to meet the expectations of our clients but to surpass them, leaving an indelible mark on the world around me through the transformative power of design and construction.

As the then trustee of the Grade I listed Pitzhanger Manor & Gallery designed by Sir John Soane, I was responsible for leading the procurement of the Pitzhanger Lodge in Ealing Council (London Borough of Ealing) that recently won a RIBA London award designed by Joanne Townshend . Some tips on procuring a beautifully designed small project . 1 - Select an Architect that is able to undertake as many of the lead design services as possible. You never need a cast of many and the Architect is always best placed to lead and coordinate a project of this scale. Jo was Architect, Lead designer, Project manager, Planning consultant ,Contract administrator and Principle Designer. It worked like clockwork . 2 - If you want the structure to be expressive and be able to tell its own story, pick an engineer that see's their practice as making art. Steve Webb of Webb Yates Engineers practices this way . 3 -To reduce carbon in the building, first reduce it in its fabric . We decided to make the entire structure without steel or concrete and instead from timber. 4-Omit as much of the needles technology as possible ...it will go out of date and only ever goes wrong. Buildings don't need to be over complicated, instead allow them to be easily adapted. 5- Finally, pick individuals whether they are the designers or contractors that you know that when you a hit a problem and you will, that there is a culture to work together and to proactively find a solution. https://lnkd.in/eSWk65vd
