🍺 🔍 Talking about beer - but from an institutional research perspective: Johannes Glückler and Yannick Eckhardt presented their work on illicit innovation in the Bavarian beer brewing landscape at the "Geographisches Kolloquium" on Hops, Malt and Water at the Katholische Universität Eichstätt-Ingolstadt. Legally, in Bavaria only the traditional purity-brewing is allowed. However, in the face of the attention on more creative means of brewing (for example when it comes to craft beers), brewers increasingly found themselves restricted by the traditional purity law. In their research, Johannes Glückler and Yannick Eckhardt found that as a consequence, brewers successfully legitimized the counter-institution of naturalness brewing by folding their new norm over the established one in order to prevail with new brewing practices. Thank you for inviting us to the colloquium and for the interesting discussion and exchange, especially to Dr. Frank Zirkel, Dr. Frank Braun, Alfred Greiner, and Robert Scholz. 📄 If you want to read more on illicit innovation and institutional change in the Bavarian brewing landscape, here's the link to the research paper behind the talk: 👉 https://lnkd.in/dPq5r8kn #beer #beerbrewing #institutionalresearch #leisuregeographies #geography #reinheitsgebot

Did you know that the wood used for wine barrels is not harvested from oak trees growing in South Africa? As this fallen oak tree in Stellenbosch shows, the wood from these trees is too porous for barrels. Instead, the wood for wine barrels is imported from France, North America, and Romania. South African oak trees are primarily of the Quercus robur species, introduced from Holland by Van Riebeeck in 1656. Interestingly, the bark of these trees has long been used for tanning leather, containing tannin that has been used since Roman times. Wine barrels add a range of flavors, colors, and aromas to wine. Did you know that the largest wine barrel in the world is in Heidelberg Tun and holds 225,000 liters of wine? On a side note, in South Africa, an oak is also a term used to refer to a male person, usually a stranger.

A nice range of harvest options due to the acidity - stand alone or blended as either the primary or secondary, it will stand up or complement your wine. Very versatile
Picpoul blanc coming out STRONG! 💪 Love our southern French varieties here in Texas, thanks for forging the way on many of these beloved varieties for everyone Tablas Creek Vineyard! At a bit over 28 acres planted across two sites, Texas Vine Country is one of the largest plantings of Picpoul Blanc in Texas. Only 0.75% of what France has, but it’s a start! 🤣 We love picpoul’s bright vibrant acidity and tropical flavor it can bring. It makes both a beautiful varietal wine as well as an amazing blending partner, especially for our hot climate and sandy soils where other whites can be lacking in the acid department. If this grape sounds neat, check out some of the others we grow like Marsanne and Tannat! #texasvineyards #texaswine FermForge Brian CHEESEBOROUGH Matt Moreland Mike Moreland KEELEY HUBBARD TRACY HUBBARD

Good read
Had a blast learning and writing about OTHER American oaks. Beyond Quercus Alba, some distillers and coopers are working with different species of Quercus and overcoming challenges to find interesting and exciting homegrown flavors. https://lnkd.in/gtbtkQ54

Understanding the soil is crucial for producing high-end wines. As our esteemed vineyard manager, "Professor" Eduardo Velazquez, explains, a 'calicata' is an excavation that helps us uncover the characteristics of the soil, monitor root development, and observe water behavior within the soil profile. When this study is made permanent through a structure known as a rhizotron, we can continuously analyze how water interacts with the soil. This in-depth knowledge not only sheds light on the vital role of soil in winemaking but also underscores its importance in crafting premium wines.

Winegrowing in English -For my network in the wine industry, another post just for you :-) What happens in the vineyard in the course of one year? Do you know the vine is dormant in winter (Winterruhe - dormir französisch schlafen)? Do you know the words budbreak/budburst (Austrieb) and blossoming/flowering (Blütezeit)? Another word for harvesting is picking (and not picking up). Some bunches (one bunch = eine Traube) you pick earlier, some later, some are fully ripe, some are healthy, some are infested with noble rot (botrytis). Tasks of the vintner in the vineyard: prune the vines (Reben schneiden) bend the canes (biegen) chop the prunings (das abgeschnittene Holz häxeln) repair the poles and the trellis (Drahtrahmen) ---- if you want to learn more vocabulary, come into one of my expert English seminars for winemakers/sommeliers. If you just need help with a translation, I also do that :-) #weinenglisch #englischkursonline #sprachschuleonline Photo By Jo Leonhardt | Unsplash

Sausage of the month: Schüblig Schüblig are various heavily smoked sausages made throughout the German-Speaking part of Switzerland as well as the Black Forest and Lake Constance areas of Southern Germany. Made of Pork, or Beef, some Schüblig are classified as dry sausage, while others are cooked smoked sausage. In Eastern Switzerland, Häsch Schüblig i de Ore? (have you got schüblig in your ears?) is a common saying when someone misunderstands and can't make out what is being said. Teijsen BV's Natural Casings are perfect for the production of some Schüblig sausages. #SausageoftheMonth; #Schüblig; #SwissSausage; #March; #NaturalCasings; #TeijsenBV; #YourSausageOurCase; #Highquality; #Family; #Traditions; #FamilyCompany; #Qualitymatters!;
