According to a comparative analysis by BioResources, moulded fibre pulp generally offers superior cushioning and impact absorption due to its ability to be moulded into precise shapes that cradle the product. 💡SPOTLIGHT on case study Chiltern Pressed Oils The Brief: - Chiltern Pressed Oils came to us looking for a change of packaging format for their rapeseed oil. - They were packaging in plastic with a label but wanted to rebrand to a premium pack for high end retailers. The Solution: - We encouraged a move to metal and supplied an oblong can (42mm piercing, 2.5L with a berg fitment). - We stopped using foil labels and moved to bespoke cut labels, where the metal shines through instead. This perfectly emulated their previous design while giving that premium feel. There were no significant differences in basic dimensions between tested boxes of various materials, while the significant differences were occurred in weight and box wall thickness. Test included measuring of vertical forces required for deforming complete box and at particular place for each egg in a box till contact with eggs. According to the obtained results, cardboard boxes can provide the best mechanical protection for eggs. The average force required for deforming complete cardboard box was 83.6% higher than for solid polystyrene box, and even 289.5% higher than for expanded polystyrene box. The average force required for deforming cardboard box at particular place for each egg in a box was 60.8% higher than for polystyrene box, and 74.0% higher than for expanded polystyrene box. Based on the results obtained by testing of ten-eggs boxes made of different materials can be concluded that the cardboard boxes can provide better mechanical protection for eggs than solid polystyrene and expanded polystyrene boxes. Cardboard boxes had the highest resistance to deformation and much higher forces were required for deforming complete cardboard boxes and also at particular place for each egg in a box in comparison to polystyrene boxes. Disposable tableware: Is it really #green? A very interesting finding was published in a brief article in the magazine UFC Que Choisir (a major French consumer rights association), October 2023 edition. As it seems, surprisingly, disposable tableware (made from cardboard, vegetable pulp or palm leaves) are NOT ALWAYS more #environmentallyfriendly or healthier than plastic. In addition, according to the magazine, Belgian researchers analyzed 39 references of straws based on different materials (bamboo, paper, plastic, glass and stainless steel). They found that PFASs (toxic substances that are very persistent in the environment) were more frequently present in PLANT-BASED products, such as paper and bamboo. While these PFASs sometimes come from the raw materials themselves, they may also have been added for waterproofing purposes during the manufacturing process. They conclude that it's best to turn to stainless steel straws, or simply give them up. Bottom line: Sometimes what seems to be a great, green solution might not really be the best alternative...
