Cooking is one of Tennessee's leading causes of home fires. Unfortunately, careless cooking can turn a relaxing family meal into an emergency! The Tennessee State Fire Marshal's Office encourages Tennesseans to keep these safety tips in mind as you prepare your next meal: -To prevent cooking fires, you must be alert. You will not be alert if you are sleepy, have consumed alcohol, or have taken medicine or drugs that make you drowsy. -Stay in the kitchen when you are frying, grilling or broiling. If you have to leave the room, even for a moment, turn off the burner. - Use a kitchen timer when boiling, simmering, baking, or roasting to remind yourself to check the cooking often. - Keep an all-purpose fire extinguisher nearby. Never use water to extinguish a grease or oil fire. If the fire is manageable, use your all-purpose fire extinguisher. If the fire increases, immediately call the fire department by dialing 9-1-1. - Use working smoke alarms. Need working smoke alarms? Request one through our "Get Alarmed, Tennessee!" program. 🍳 This February, we're taking the opportunity to remind you to #TakeCareInTheKitchen. ✅ We'll be sharing top safety tips throughout the month to keep you and your family safe! 👩👧 Today we're talking about cooking with hot oil. 👉 Never fill a pan more than one third full with hot oil. 👉 Never leave the pan unattended with the heat switch on. 👉 Make sure that food is dried thoroughly before putting it in hot oil - even small amounts of water will cause oil to spit. 👉 If your oil starts smoking, it's too hot - turn off the heat and leave it to cool. 👉 Never put food into the pan if the oil is smoking. 🍳 If your pan catches fire: 🔥 Turn off the heat under the pan (if it’s safe to do so) and allow it to cool. 🔥 Leave the pan where it is – don’t move it. 🔥 Never throw water over it or use a fire extinguisher - the effects can be devastating and spread the fire further. 🔥 Leave the room, close the door, get everyone out of your home and stay out. Then call 999.

When we age, doing a lot of the necessary things to live on our own like cooking, bathing, and walking becomes not only challenging but very dangerous. A lot of the things that we take for granted like walking to the mailbox, going outside to mow the grass, cooking especially with grease, which is also a potential fire hazard, can be very dangerous as we get older because of the risk of falling. This is one of the main reasons you should consider assisted living for your elder care needs. Come see our blog post on our blog on our website for more information about the benefits of assisted living. https://lnkd.in/eiARKP42
