Blood is classified as an essential medicine by the WHO. However, the demand for safe and sufficient blood remains high across Africa, compounded by logistical hurdles in collecting, processing, and distributing blood products. For example, 7 people in Kenya require blood every 10 minutes. However, the country can only collect 16% of the required blood. Voluntary blood donation plays a critical role in addressing the shortage of blood and ultimately reducing mortality and morbidity, especially for people with hemoglobinopathy-related conditions such as SCD and Thalassemia. Addressing the Urgent Need for a Blood Bank in Mogadishu In light of recent events in Liido, where a tragic attack claimed the lives of many and left numerous others injured, our community has once again shown its resilience and solidarity. However, the incident also highlighted a critical gap in our healthcare infrastructure—the absence of a centralized blood bank in Mogadishu. During the emergency, hospital staff and management took to social media, urgently requesting blood donations from the community. While the response was heartening, this situation underscores the need for a more reliable and organized approach to ensure the availability of blood when it is most needed. Establishing a blood bank is not just a healthcare necessity; it is a strategic investment in our community's safety and well-being. I believe this is an opportunity for us to come together—healthcare professionals, government officials, and community leaders—to develop a sustainable solution that can save lives and provide essential support in emergencies. I encourage all stakeholders to collaborate and share their expertise and resources to make this vision a reality. Together, we can build a healthcare system that meets the needs of our people and ensures that no life is lost due to a lack of medical resources. If you are interested in contributing to this effort or have ideas on how we can move forward, please reach out. Let's work together to strengthen our community and protect the health and safety of our citizens. #Healthcare #Mogadishu #BloodBank #CommunitySupport #PublicHealth #Africa

The cardiac patient during Ramadan and Hajj The holy month of Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam. During this month, fasting Muslims refrain from eating, drinking, smoking, and sex from dawn until sunset. Although the Quran exempts sick people from the duty of fasting, it is not uncommon for many heart disease patients to fast during Ramadan. Even though more than a billion Muslims worldwide fast during Ramadan, there is no clear consensus on its effects on cardiac disease. Some studies have shown that the effects of fasting on stable patients with cardiac disease are minimal and the majority of patients with stable cardiac illness can endure Ramadan fasting with no clinical deterioration. https://lnkd.in/g8sBhsZi #fasting #sadaqah #zakat #charity #ramadan2024 #Ramadan1445 #ReadQuran #recitequran #itikaf #Quran

🩸Enhancing blood donation culture in Africa:Overcoming the barriers for life saving impact. As a pathologist, I understand the critical importance of safe blood transfusions in saving lives across African communities. Yet, challenges persist in accessing an adequate blood supply due to cultural barriers, misconceptions, and fears surrounding blood donation. Addressing these obstacles requires collaborative efforts from healthcare professionals, policymakers, and community leaders. By fostering trust, promoting education, and implementing robust safety measures, we can inspire a positive shift in attitudes towards blood donation. Lets advocate for a stronger blood donation culture in Africa. Together, we can overcome barriers, increase donation rates, and ultimately, make a life-saving impact in our communities. 💉 @Kenya Medical Association #BloodDonation #Healthcare #Africa #CommunityEngagement

Ghana, like many other countries, faces challenges in maintaining a sufficient blood supply. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that a country should collect blood from at least 1% of its population to meet basic blood requirements. This means at least 330,000 Ghanaians should be donating at every point in time to meet basic demands. Basic demands does not factor in Emergencies and special situations the require higher volumes of blood. More often than not, Ghana falls short of this target. Some of the factors that account for this deficit are : 1. Low Voluntary Donation Rates 2. Poor Infrastructure and Resources 3. Lack of Public Awareness and Education The shortage of blood has serious consequences, especially in emergencies, surgeries, and for patients with conditions like anemia or sickle cell disease. Hospitals often face difficulties in securing the blood needed for these cases. Hence there is the need for sustainable solutions to this problem. As part of our VICCO61AID’s effort in promoting health and helping tackle this problem, we embarked on a blood donation drive/campaign earlier. The role of NGO’s and community based groups and religious bodies can not be overemphasised in the campaign and quest to reduce these deficit. By organising more awareness campaigns and promoting healthy blood donation culture, this puts us a step in the right direction.

Certainly! Let's explore the eligibility criteria for blood donation among individuals with diabetes in different countries: #drcsbuch 1. **United States (U.S.)**: - **Diabetics** can **still donate blood** if their diabetes is **well-controlled**². - The **National Institutes of Health (NIH)** state that having diabetes should not affect a person's ability to donate blood as long as they are feeling well². 2. **United Kingdom (U.K.)**: - The **NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT)** in the U.K. **does not allow** blood donation by individuals with diabetes, as it could pose risks³. - However, those with **prediabetes** may be eligible to donate. 3. **Canada**: - In Canada, if you use **insulin** to manage your blood sugar, you can donate blood³. Please note that these guidelines may differ in other regions or countries, so individuals with diabetes should consult with local healthcare authorities or blood donation centers to ensure their eligibility¹. #drcsbuch #health #blooddonation #wgf #vadodara
