𝗜𝗘𝗖 𝟲𝟬𝟲𝟬𝟭-𝟭, 𝟰𝘁𝗵 𝗲𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 kick-off meeting at AAMI has started this week 29 Apr - 3 May with a full day of training and the 12 Working Groups have been meeting to get this project started. The working groups are reviewing the final design specification and starting to figure out our next steps to implement it into the development process for the 4th edition of IEC 60601-1. The "train is rolling" forward and you should start thinking about the impact on your company. Thanks to IFSJ magazine for the opportunity to have an article in the April edition of IFSJ on pages 118-120. It is the third part of a series on the use of thermal imaging cameras for Hazmat incidents. The article covers the identification of spills and leaks of liquids and gases. The full article is at: https://lnkd.in/gSwEKZPx Direct Temperature Measurement (DTM) should not be used during active fire for structural firefighting, however. Allowing for inaccuracy in temperature measurements due to several factors including but not limited to such things as; the emissivity of the surface (a shiny surface has low emissivity), background energy that may be reflected, the accuracy of the equipment, Instantaneous Field of View (IFOV) & Distance to Spot Ratio (D:S Ratio) of your camera and the skill and knowledge of the operator and other factors. For some applications, such as Hazmat, electrical or mechanical equipment inspections, and even some overhaul tasks, a firefighting TIC can still provide useful DTM just as commercial TICs can when used in other industries when used within their limitations. When monitoring a cold object in this example, we may be able to determine using a “trending assessment” that the energy is increasing, staying the same, or decreasing by temperature measurements over time. Even inaccurate measurements can provide this, but it is important to be consistent and measure the same point of aim and from the same distance each time. DTM and quantitative assessment will allow us to record and monitor energy levels over time. A task that would be difficult using apparent temperature (qualitative assessment) only. Within reason and despite equipment inaccuracies and other factors including a lag in temperature change, this may still provide a trending assessment. Training, skills, and knowledge are key to using DTM. **🔒 The Critical Role of Signaling devices in Machine Safety: Ensuring Minimal Residual Risk** In the world of machine safety, certain risks simply cannot be fully eliminated through design alone. That’s where **signaling devices** step in, playing a vital role in minimizing residual risks that remain. Signal devices—whether visual or audible—provide essential alerts to operators and anyone nearby in the dangerous zone, signaling the start-up of machinery or indicating changes in operational modes, like during muting operations. But it’s not just about sending a signal; it’s about sending a **reliable** signal that reaches people. 🔹 **Start-up Warnings**: These are crucial for alerting personnel before a machine starts, ensuring that everyone is aware of potential hazards. 🔹 **Muting Operations**: When safety functions are temporarily deactivated (e.g., during material transport through light barriers), signal devices help monitor and communicate the status, ensuring that full safety functionality is restored promptly. Understanding the connection between **Safety Integrity Level (SIL)** and **Performance Level (PL)** is key: - **SIL** (as per IEC 61508) is used to measure the functional safety of a system, with levels from SIL 1 to SIL 4. - **PL** (ISO 13849-1) assesses the likelihood and severity of potential failures, ranging from PLa to PLe. When choosing signaling devices for safety-critical systems, they must meet the specific SIL or PL required by the application. This ensures: 1. **Reliability**: The device has a low probability of failure. 2. **Diagnostic Capability**: Faults are detected, reported quickly and will not lead to lost of the safety function. 3. **Redundancy & Diversity**: Enhancing reliability, especially in higher SIL/PL environments. Ultimately, ensuring that all safety components, including signaling devices, meet the required standards is crucial for maintaining a safe operational environment.
