Today, on World Mental Health Day, I’m thinking back to the pandemic and the impact it had on young people, particularly teenage girls. The emotional toll was heavy, and I saw it firsthand with my daughter, who, like many others her age, faced incredible challenges. My friends and I shared stories of how our daughters struggled through the isolation and uncertainty, and it was heartbreaking to watch. But out of those struggles came something beautiful. My daughter started a club at her school to support other teens going through tough times, recognizing how much they needed a safe space to connect and heal. Just last week, she was in our kitchen on a baking frenzy to raise money for mental health causes. She even recruited me into the process, and though I was tired, how could I possibly say no? I couldn’t be prouder to stand beside her in this mission. Let’s continue to support our youth and raise awareness about the importance of mental health. I had the pleasure of running into two incredible allies, Jeremiah Chan and Suzanne Harrison, who like me, are passionate about diversity in the IP space. These are the kind of people who will mention your name in the room when you’re not there, and they’ve done that for me on more than one occasion. We crossed paths at the The National Council on Patent Practicum, Inc. (NCPP)'s reception before the Emory University School of Law conference, and recognizing that I, like them, was speaking at the conference and needed to get back to the Emory Conference Hotel, they sought me out to make sure I had a ride. Such a simple gesture, but it truly made me feel cared for and supported. I’m so grateful for allies like Jeremiah and Suzanne, who look out for others in both small and big ways. It is not often that I take time off in October to travel with family! But next week, I am so excited to be heading to my homeland, Rhodes, Greece. My sister’s daughter is getting married in Lindos, the village where my mother was born. Lindos is an ancient city crowned by an acropolis that houses the ruins of a temple to Athena. As a first-generation American, I often just wanted to fit in, and being "Greek" sometimes made me feel excluded. As much as I tried to keep my identity hidden, my olive skin, dark eyes, and dark hair would inevitably give it away. Now, I couldn’t be prouder of my heritage. The Greeks have given so much to the world—democracy, philosophy, the Olympics, just to name a few. And the cherry on top—traveling back to one of the most beautiful places on earth! One of the best parts of my travels last week was running into the incredible Anupma Sahay!
