Obviously as is absolutely the case with regards to every discipline and profession, there are, of course "bad/ corrupted criminals-in-disguise", effectively. That must be rooted out. However, if you are going to let an exceptionally tiny minority of such sorry excuses-for people justify your not actively supporting the #thinblueline, then you are absolutely one of the also exceptionally tiny but - generally - obnoxiously-loud minority, who are a giant part of the problem. That is, the problem of the very deliberate dividing of this nation, the epidemic of crime in far too many formerly safe cities and towns and generally, the continuing breakdown of law and order, the Rule of Law and the emerging reign of an increasingly-obvious also very deliberate, Two-Tiered so-called "Justice" system. +++ But that's just what I think might be happening and might be some of the causes. Excellent compare-contrast. If anything even remotely like this imbalance happened in the private sector, our Litigation Economy or Bloated Regulatory aka 'Administrative State" would surely drop down on said private sector enterprise like a ton of bricks. And especially if that "imbalance" was not by one of the Big-Get-Bigger Cronies of Fed.gov; simply-stated if a small or otherwise non-lobbyists-paying private sector enterprise perpetrated any such imbalance in treating two different "situations" this way, that small private sector enterprise would surely be in very big trouble, indeed! Remember the case of the small business put out of business because they were Christian-owned and asked a would-be customer to get their "wedding cake" for their Gay Wedding from another business? But instead the story got splashed all over the news and the small business owners were ultimately forced out of business? Yeah, that's the America we live in today so are we really surprised at this obvious imbalance by the clearly entirely objective Fed.gov on the Trump Assassination try? Trump Derangement Syndrome (TDS)! - Symptoms: Uncontrollable eye-rolling at the mention of Trump, spontaneous fits of fact-checking, and an intense urge to debunk every tweet. Accused sufferers vehemently oppose Trump, sometimes with a fervor that rivals a sports fan during the playoffs. CCS - "Conning Conundrum Syndrome" is like having a GPS that stubbornly refuses to recalibrate. You're headed for a cliff, but it keeps saying, "Turn right in 100 feet." You’re convinced the destination is glorious, but spoiler alert: it’s a steep drop into reality. TDS - "Trump Derangement Syndrome" is like having a highly sensitive radar that detects every single Trump-related blip, no matter how small. You’re hyper-aware of every move, comment, and typo, often resulting in high blood pressure and a sudden urge to tweet. Denial vs. Obsession - CCS: "No way, Trump’s perfect!" - TDS: "No way, Trump’s terrible!" Blame Game vs. Blame Flame - CCS: "What about those emails?" - TDS: "What about that tax return?" Loyalty vs. Paranoia - CCS: "Trump could do no wrong." - TDS: "Trump can do no right." The Hilarious Hypocrisy: - CCS sufferers are like fans at a magic show, utterly convinced that the magician’s tricks are real, while TDS sufferers are the skeptics yelling, "I see the wires!" - CCS Remedy: "Come on, admitting you've been conned isn't that bad. Think of it like realizing the magician pulls rabbits out of hats, not thin air." - TDS Remedy: "Hey, take a breath. Sometimes it’s okay to let a tweet pass by without a full investigation. Not every blip is a bombshell." In the grand scheme of things, both CCS and TDS could use a little bit of perspective, a dash of humor, and a lot less stress. After all, life’s too short to be stuck in a syndrome, right? So, whether you’re staunchly defending or constantly critiquing, remember to laugh along the way. Because in the end, we’re all just trying to navigate this crazy world, one conundrum at a time.

“Traditional public defense is case-centered. Holistic defense is client-centered.” I started out as a public defender at Legal Aid in the Bronx criminal defense division in 1997. I’ve witnessed the change Sellitti speaks about. It took a long time, but it seems that this is becoming a nationwide understanding of our role and how we are tasked with so much more than just “prepping for trial.” Perhaps to the disappointment of many new public defenders, trials are sometimes very few and far between. The statistics are pretty clear as to the percentage of our cases that go to trial (.2% is generous). Sometimes we are the client’s conduit to every need. Housing, immigration, mental health, civil collateral consequences, re-entry to society after serving time, etc. The reason we are tasked with these responsibilities is because our clients’ needs go unmet in their communities. It is only when they have entered the criminal legal system that our offices see how neglected many of our clients have been. We need to continue to raise awareness as to our needs for more funding because we really are a huge contributor in making our communities safer.
