Alcohol acts on gamma-aminobutyric acid, in the brain, a neurotransmitter that inhibits impulses between nerve cells and has a calming effect. Alcohol can also suppress rapid eye movement, or REM sleep, which is when most dreaming occurs. During this REM sleep emotional experiences are processed and memories are consolidated. The brain also rests and repairs itself. If you've had enough REM sleep, you'll wake up feeling refreshed and alert. Therefore, that "great sleep" you had after a night cap is not as productive as you may have thought and has a negative impact on your brains function and overall productivity the next day. If you have a smart health device take note of your sleep score after a night consuming alcohol as apposed to a night without it! If you're considering taking back control, complete our quiz to see what parts of your life you should focus on and alcohols current impact on them! Reminder: Drink a glass of water upon waking up. It helps kickstart metabolism, flush out toxins, and rehydrate your body after sleep. Studies suggest that even mild dehydration can affect mood and cognitive function. I aim for ~32 fl oz when I first wake up. (Masento et al., 2014). #Hydration #stayhydrated #integrativehealth

Adequate sleep supports cognitive processes, enhances memory consolidation, and promotes emotional well-being. It allows the brain to clear out toxins accumulated throughout the day, helping to prevent neurodegenerative diseases and cognitive decline. For the body, sleep facilitates tissue repair, muscle growth, and the regulation of vital processes like metabolism and immune function. By resetting and rejuvenating the brain and body daily, sleep helps ensure that we remain healthier and more resilient over time.
