As investors seek to capitalize on what is expected to become a multimillion-dollar market opportunity, the installation of electric car charging stations is picking up steam across Africa due to the growing demand for e-mobility. Meanwhile, the 2023 National Charging Network here in the United States projects that, in order to support a mid-adoption scenario of 33 million PEVs on the road by 2030, a cumulative capital investment of $31–$55 billion in publicly accessible charging infrastructure is needed. 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗮 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗧𝘄𝗼 𝗩𝗲𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝗣𝗲𝗿 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗿 Understanding China’s EV industry includes understanding the goals of national ministries and local governments when it comes to EV charging.  The Chinese charging infrastructure has developed rapidly.  China’s goal is to have two vehicles per charger.  In a country with about 420 million vehicles, that would mean 210 million chargers!  The current ratio of private cars to private chargers is 2 to 1 already, while the ratio of all operating vehicles to public chargers is 5:1.  As an example of how quickly chargers are penetrating the country, in the major city of Shenzhen, they built 362 supercharging stations and now that number exceeded the number of gas stations and the number of chargers at the stations exceeded the number of pumps in their gas stations.  We’ll be discussing this topic along with others related to charging at our upcoming 16th Annual Propulsion Strategies for the 21st Century conference on July 17th which will focus on the Future of EV Charging.

Was on BFM 89.9 - The Business Station last week with Daniel Fernandez and Richard Bradbury to talk about the Malaysian EV Ecosystem. One hour was definitely not enough time to delve into the details, whys and why-nots but it was a great start. Information transparency is foundational in building an efficient EV ecosystem. JPJ really should be publishing (ala Singapore's LTA) data on vehicle registrations by brand and by fuel, so that all stakeholders can make informed decisions. Suruhanjaya Tenaga (Energy Commission) did well to publish the list of EVCS licensees, we suggest they improve this by making the whole process online and more foolproof, such that there are fewer instances of rejected applications due to incomplete information. Three countries covering ~20% of the EU’s surface area (The Netherlands, France, and Germany) are home to 61% of all EU charging points. The remaining 39% of all chargers are distributed throughout 24 other countries, covering ~80% of the EU landscape. Top 5: countries with the MOST public charging points in the EU -Netherlands (144,453) -Germany (120,625) -France (119,255) -Belgium (44,363) -Italy (41,114) Top 5: countries with the FEWEST public charging points in the EU -Croatia (1,074) -Estonia (683) -Latvia (535) -Cyprus (329) -Malta (101) This variation in the distribution of public charge points across the EU is the result of several factors such as local government policies, economic conditions, urbanization, EV adoption rates, private sector involvement, grid capacity, and regional initiatives. Countries and regions that prioritize and invest in EV infrastructure development are typically those with more extensive networks of public charge points. #evcharging #ev #electricvehicles #eMobility

My presentation at NAACAM in Pretoria, South Africa today was well received. Though I apparently overwhelmed attendees with EV (NEV) trends and insights - but the one slide that everyone was talking about was this one below that shows how far behind South Africa is in BEV adoption. There are a lot of reasons for this, including an unreliable grid, the huge cost premium of BEVs, a lack of charging infrastructure, and no government incentives for consumers. Part of my recommendation was that the country focus on regular hybrids and increasingly PHEVs which have the best of both worlds and building out DCFC infrastructure (which costs 10X more than AC/L2 charging in SA) is not necessary — and several OEMs are starting to produce PHEVs in South Africa. But was fascinating for me to learn about the challenges and issues in South Africa these last few days.

This I why I am very excited to see that Audi South Africa continues to invest in South Africa 🇿🇦 in collaboration with partners such as Rubicon and GridCars. Following extensive investments in 2022 and 2023. — during which time Audi and its strategic partners GridCars and Rubicon added more than 120 DC and AC public charging points to the national grid — the brand has once again partnered with Rubicon to install six 150 kW DC fast public chargers in convenient locations nationwide.
