Yesterday, after the conference ended, Samin Merrikh and I spent the day exploring San Francisco before our flight home. One of the most important things for me to see was the Sea Lions at Pier 39 in Fishermans Wharf. As a lover of animals, it was incredible to see hundreds of them laying on floating platforms a few feet away from us. In the 30 minutes we spent there, the two Sea Lions seen fighting in the video caught my attention the most. The entire time we were there, they were fighting each other(markedly funny, the other sea lions were completely unbothered). The sea lion that got knocked into the water first, went 0-3 against his adversary. But he kept coming back for more. I couldn't help but be inspired by his resilience and perseverance. In a lot of ways, I felt connected to the sea lion for never giving up. Cold calling and sales is similar, in that you may lose the first, second, third, fourth, fifth, and sixth time, but you may win on the seventh, eigth, ninth, or tenth. There is no way to know exactly when the tides will turn in your favour, but if you stop trying, you ensure defeat. Notably, every time the sea lion came back, his approach changed slightly, whether attacking from a different side, using a different move, or striking when least expected. In the end of the video, we even see a shift in arena from terrestial to aquatic environment. The sales equivalent is when leveraging a multi-channel approach, multi-threading, and consistency. Just like the sea lion battle, timing is everything. *Disclaimer* - I am not a marine biologist. I don't know whether the behaviour was normal, or what the end result of the sea lion battle was. I hope they were both okay and it was a healthy social interaction(akin to how my colleagues and I wrestle in the office).
