What is Embodied Carbon and Why It Matters for Sustainable Building? Embodied carbon refers to the total greenhouse gas emissions associated with the production, transportation, and assembly of building materials throughout their lifecycle. Unlike operational carbon, which comes from energy used during a building's use, embodied carbon is tied to the initial construction phase and material choices. Why Embodied Carbon Matters: 1. Environmental Impact: Embodied carbon significantly contributes to a building's overall carbon footprint. By addressing it, we can lower the total emissions associated with new construction. 2. Material Choices: The type of materials used—whether concrete, steel, or timber—affects the embodied carbon. Sustainable materials often have a lower carbon footprint and can be sourced locally. 3. Lifecycle Perspective: Considering embodied carbon encourages a holistic view of sustainability, factoring in the environmental impact of materials from production to end-of-life. Strategies to Reduce Embodied Carbon: - Choose Low-Carbon Materials: Opt for materials with lower carbon emissions, such as bamboo or recycled steel. - Optimize Design: Use design strategies that minimize material use without compromising structural integrity. - Recycling and Reuse: Incorporate recycled materials and design for future adaptability to extend the life of the building. At our self-sustainable city project, we're committed to reducing embodied carbon by selecting sustainable materials and efficient construction practices. Learn more about our approach and how we're building greener communities by visiting Self-Sustainable City. 1% Do You want to live like them? Ecological & Sustainable Design Firms, or the 99%? When 1% of global buildings are considered energy efficient or green and are not meeting standards for energy efficiency or sustainability certifications states International Energy Agency (IEA) in their 2022 IEA Energy Efficiency Report it is important. Only 1% of buildings are certified under LEED, BREEAM, WELL, or ILFI and the like, globally. It also matters a great deal when IEA notes that all new buildings must be zero-carbon ready by 2030 to meet climate targets. It matters so you can calculate the costs and upfront work for your businesses in order to meet these targets and stay ahead of the competition. As a consumer, you can educate yourself on what suits your needs and desires for 90% of your indoor occupying life. So, let’s dive in on what ecological vs sustainability design is so, that it meets your certification needs and the desires to live in them. Defining enjoyment in the crevices of living sustainable or ecological, how about both? Let’s take a closer look at the nuances in between, like Einstein, so you can look towards finding living spaces that feels right and perfect for you. First, ecological design focuses on the ability to incorporate nature into products, buildings and systems. They include the entire life cycle from material sourcing to disposal, while also including aspects like energy efficiency, resources and adding biodiversity. One example, is the Bullitt Center in Seattle, Washington. It has been titled as the “greenest commercial building in the world.” It achieved this title because it meets the Living Building Challenge standards of sustainability and ecological features such as: a rainwater to drinking water system, composting toilets, energy efficiency measures, and solar renewable energy, so the building creates more energy than it needs. . . . . . . full article and additional information at Regenerative Systems website. . . These are just a few ways ecological versus sustainable design are different to help give you as an interested dweller of these designs, a budding student of architectural design, or a non-profit or governmental department seeking to provide improved quality housing in your area. This gives all stakeholders an opportunity to move forward to achieving our climate target goals of 99% more green and energy efficient certified buildings to be zero-carbon ready by 2030. And, what to look for and ask for to live like the 1% relative to the 99%. Would you feel healthier, stronger, and happier because of it? #EcologicalDesign #SustainableLiving #GreenArchitecture #LivingBuildingChallenge #BullittCenter #GreenBuilding #EnergyEfficiency #LEEDCertified #NetZeroEnergy #BiodiversityInDesign #ClimateAction #UNSDGs #SustainableCities #ResilientArchitecture #HealthyBuildings #EnvironmentalImpact #SustainabilityGoals #NatureInspiredDesign 😀 Chat GPT and Google Gemini

Country Manager Norway at Porcelanosa Grupo - Manufacturer, distributor, and retailer of architecture and interior design solutions.
Contributing to green building certification: the LEED, BREEAM and VERDE building certificates. LEED, BREEAM and VERDE are green building certification systems, which assess buildings as opposed to products. When products by Porcelanosa are used in building projects, they can contribute to the achievement of a certain rating for that building by obtaining more points than other alternative products. With these green certification systems (LEED, BREEAM & VERDE), third-party checks are conducted and successful building projects are certified as having been designed and built using strategies conceived to improve on key environmental aspects of their design, such as energy saving, efficient water consumption, a reduction in C02 emissions, improvements to the building’s indoor environmental quality, the use of recycled materials or ones with an ecolabel (EPDs, Ecolabels, carbon footprint certificates etc.), the use of local raw materials close to the production plant so as to cut down on transport etc. Porcelanosa’s products are designed to help architects obtain certain points or credits awarded by these green certification systems, thus facilitating the materials specification process. Depending on the global rating that it achieves, a building will be certified as falling into one of the following categories: LEED, basic, silver, gold and platinum. BREEAM, pass, good, very good, excellent, outstanding. VERDE, ranging from a one-leaf certificate to a five-leaf one. Porcelanosa products can be used to obtain LEED, BREEAM and VERDE points in different categories of the rating systems, depending on their use: - Recycled material content. - Environmental certificates (ecolabels). - Easy to care for, with no need for aggressive chemical substances. - Energy performance (e.g. minimizing energy consumption by using pale colours with a high solar reflectance index (SRI) on facades in places with hot climates or in interiors). - Water consumption. (e.g. using a tile with an impervious surface on terraces, roofs or facades to collect rainwater, or using a product that is easy to care for since it will require less water for cleaning purposes). - Regional materials. (both quarried raw materials for production purposes and end products delivered to sites close to the production plant). 📨 Reach out for more information, material samples, EPD´s, eco-labels, environmental management certificates, etc. ♻ 🌿 💚 Porcelanosa. Sustainable Design Principles These principles collectively contribute to creating environmentally responsible, socially equitable, and economically viable designs that meet the needs of present and future generations. Integrating these principles into design processes and decision-making helps address pressing global challenges, such as climate change, resource depletion, and environmental degradation, while fostering resilience and sustainability. 1. Durability: Designing for durability is essential in sustainable design as it extends the lifespan of products and infrastructure, reducing the need for frequent replacement and minimizing resource consumption. Durable materials and construction techniques can withstand wear and tear, weathering, and other environmental stresses, resulting in lower maintenance and repair costs over time. 2. Energy Efficiency: Energy efficiency focuses on minimizing energy consumption and reducing greenhouse gas emissions associated with the operation of buildings, products, and processes. Incorporating energy-efficient technologies, such as LED lighting, high-performance insulation, and efficient appliances, helps lower energy bills, decrease reliance on fossil fuels, and mitigate climate change impacts. 3. Waste Reduction: Waste reduction strategies aim to minimize the generation of waste and promote the reuse, recycling, and composting of materials to divert them from landfills. Designing products with fewer disposable components, implementing closed-loop manufacturing processes, and incorporating cradle-to-cradle principles can help reduce waste throughout the product life cycle. 4. Indoor Air Quality: Indoor air quality (IAQ) is crucial for occupant health and well-being in buildings. Sustainable design prioritizes measures to enhance IAQ by minimizing exposure to pollutants such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs), formaldehyde, and particulate matter. This can be achieved through proper ventilation, the use of low-emission materials, and avoiding sources of indoor pollution. 5. Water Conservation: Water conservation measures are essential to sustainable design, particularly in regions facing water scarcity or drought conditions. Designing water-efficient fixtures, implementing rainwater harvesting systems, and incorporating drought-resistant landscaping can help reduce water consumption in buildings and landscapes, preserving this finite resource for future generations. 6. Sustainable Building Materials: Sustainable building materials are sourced, manufactured, and used in ways that minimize environmental impact and promote resource efficiency. This includes materials with low embodied energy, such as recycled content, rapidly renewable resources, and non-toxic alternatives. Sustainable materials contribute to healthier indoor environments, reduce environmental degradation, and support the transition to a circular economy.

Sustainable Materials for a Sustainable Future: Introducing Naviate Zero New building construction releases significant CO2 into the atmosphere, not just through the physical construction of buildings but also material fabrication, transportation, and construction waste. According to the Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI), buildings account for at least 39% of energy-related global carbon emissions annually. At least one-quarter of these emissions come from embodied carbon, or the carbon emissions associated with building materials and construction. We all want to make more sustainable choices. The problem is that sometimes, especially in construction, we have too many options and not enough information. Determining CO2 emissions for concrete, for example, isn’t a straightforward process: it depends on several variables, from the production process to the location of the fabricator to the amount of ash in the concrete mix. And finding exact calculations for each of these variables can be frustrating, time-consuming, and ultimately might feel like more effort than it’s worth. With this in mind, Symetri Europe Symetri USA set out to make a product that would help simplify the process of making more informed sustainability decisions. And thus, Naviate Zero was born. Naviate Zero is a Revit plugin designed to meticulously measure CO2 emissions originating from various building materials. By sourcing data from Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), this tool empowers architects, designers, and engineers with the knowledge and insight they need to make well-informed choices concerning material selection and overall sustainability.
