Did you know that a person's cultural values influence their gift-giving preferences, including when choosing experiences over physical items? Research has found that giving experiences (instead of material things) is often better, especially when enjoyed together. Experiences can foster a deeper relationship and emotional connection between the gift-giver and gift-receiver.  But, there is a cultural twist. Read on. According to a study by Minji Suh and Hyewon Cho (2023), those with more individual-oriented values might prefer giving an experience (over a material thing) because they focus on increasing the recipient’s personal happiness and their self-development (i.e., individually oriented values). That said, the differences in their study across #cultures were not extreme. Many people, irrespective of their cultural values, enjoyed giving experiences. This was especially true when there was low social risk around whether this was an activity that the person would enjoy -- and something that was able to be enjoyed together. (This sounds like solid advice for giving experiences, regardless of culture, IMHO.) Check out the reel to learn more. In some cultures, gifts are a significant expression of love and respect, while in others, they symbolize status or the expectation of something in return. Last week Wednesday the 14th Feb .. Special day for some, also known as 'Valentines Day' , I had the pleasure of being at the Crystal Palace stadium alongside the Palace For Life Foundation, who invited me down to speak on their 'all female panel'. Thankful to Palace for Life Foundation at Crystal Palace for the opportunity!⚡️ It was such an insightful day, sitting alongside all these other powerful females who come from different backgrounds but hearing everyone speak on their journeys and how they got where they are was truly amazing and inspiring. Whilst we were there to speak with the young people I also was inspired. I love the fact that these young females actually took the time out during their half term to want to learn more from females that are established in a career/field, and they sat down for a couple of hours listening to each of us speak, and then hit us with their questions. We split up into groups going around to each table and then speaking one on one with the young females, giving them total honesty which prepares them for life after education. I personally like to keep it very straight to the point, especially because I know when I was their age I didn't want to hear someone taking forever to get to a point I would tune out - so I feel like the realer you keep it the more they respond and relate with you. My motto which I told these young females is that they need to stand on business. When I say that I literally mean, do not let anything or anyone sway them from what you want in life. Your grades or what someone says to you does not and will not make you. For example, If you want to be an entrepreneur one day, stand on that.. if it doesn't work out at least you tried it. There is never a moment where it is too late to change your mind on what you want in life as long as you are standing on it and making changes and implementing things in your life that will get you to that point!
