"Embracing Our Unique Journeys: Stories that Bind Us Together" Many years back when I was studying overseas in the USA, a serendipitous invitation led me to a life-changing experience - listening to the wise words of Maya Angelou. Despite not knowing much about her at the time, the stories of her wisdom and the people she inspired, like Oprah Winfrey, resonated deeply with me. At the heart of her talk that evening was a poignant reminder of the agony that comes with holding onto untold stories. Our lives are a tapestry woven with a myriad of experiences, challenges, triumphs, and growth that define who we are. And when we choose to keep these stories buried within, we limit our capacity for healing, growth, and connection with others. Sharing our stories is an act of vulnerability and courage, a sacred unveiling of our shared humanity. It's through this openness that we invite others to see us authentically, to find solace in the echoes of our experiences. By sharing our truths, we not only free ourselves from the burden of untold tales but also pave the way for others to do the same. LEGACY and VALUE CONTRIBUTION Recently, in my life, three people to whom I was directly and indirectly linked passed away. The pain and sadness for their loss, however, were accompanied by an enormous sense of gratitude for the legacy of values left to me, a unique manifestation of their individual lives: community building, community commitment, living deeply, creating bridges and relationships, openness, positivity, generosity, acceptance and love. I am not telling you this to move your compassion. My intent is to share a reflection on the daily attention and care, in the moment and constantly, that we should all give to the contribution that each of us brings to society, companies, institutions, and organizations—every day, not just in retrospect! A unique, specific, valuable and fundamental contribution to the creation of that diversity that unites us all in our humanity and that we try to bring and share in the places where we live every day, the workplace. Professor Umberto Galimberti says, “We do not have identity by nature; we have it as a social gift. Our identity is the fruit of the recognitions and misrecognition that we receive in life”. Whether personal or professional, both contribute to the development of our identity. I got the best attempt at describing my true purpose in life from an outside-in perspective. It's succinct and ... Here's the very short story behind it. One of my former bosses sent me this video some time ago in February. I watched, and this conversation ensued (paraphrased) Me: Profound! I hear and see you in the quote. Ex-Boss: I see you. Keep being you! Some of us feel more alive when we dedicate our lives to pursuing a cause, fulfilling a purpose and bringing to life a vision greater than ourselves. What's your purpose, what makes you your big hairy audacious goals? The quote in the video is: "This is the true joy in life, being used for a purpose recognized by yourself as a mighty one. Being a force of nature instead of a feverish, selfish little clod of ailments and grievances, complaining that the world will not devote itself to making you happy. "From the head to the heart, through the hands." ✨ I recently saw Brené Brown post this phrase on social media with her name under it. The truth is, this powerful phrase has been passed down through generations in Indigenous communities, offering timeless wisdom for how we approach life, work, creativity, and service. It reminds us that true service and purpose don’t just come from intellectual understanding but from deeply feeling and embodying that knowledge—and then putting it into action. I had the honor of co-facilitating a retreat in Whistler last week, alongside some truly incredible humans working in restorative justice, social work, government, and other human-centered spaces. During our conversation, this phrase came up, and it resonated deeply with me. Being surrounded by people dedicated to healing and justice was humbling. I saw these words in action—so many were taking the wisdom they carry in their heads, feeling its weight in their hearts, and turning it into tangible change with their hands. Maybe that’s why seeing it pop up on social media without proper attribution felt even more jarring than usual. I commented on Dr. Brown’s post and to her credit she did respond, but instead of taking accountability for appropriating indigenous wisdom she explained her research to me and noted that most concepts we wrote about are rooted in indigenous wisdom and insights. I’m not entirely surprised, but I am disappointed. It’s a reminder for all of us: What we create, how we serve, and the impact we make in the world is usually rooted in wisdom, which transforms when it’s felt and acted upon. As creators and writers we have to do better at recognizing that what we’re creating is likely building on wisdom and teachings that have been here for generations.
