Future of AI Shaped at SIM IT Club Hackathon: Students Lead Charge with Sustainable Solutions TLDR: A successful hackathon with 80 students across 20 teams showcased many outstanding projects. The collaboration with Replicate and Omnitool emphasized open-source as a gateway to AI knowledge, unlocking endless possibilities for learning and building AI solutions. Highlighting 'Women in AI,' the hackathon was organized by two leading women, with significant female participation and victories, showcasing women's leadership in AI at SIM. The event boasted a ratio of 3 women to 1 man, reinforcing diversity in the field. The winning projects, particularly 'Nurse AI,' demonstrated a commitment to using AI for social good, addressing real-world problems. This hackathon is a testament to a generation poised to navigate the technical revolution with innovation and hope. Winners: 1st Place: THE IT DUDES with 'Nurse AI' 2nd Place: AYCE with 'TextToSlides' 3rd Place: TEAM with 'Career Pilot' Nurse AI is a groundbreaking application designed to support the elderly, including those with early-stage dementia, language barriers, deteriorating eyesight, and hearing impairment. This app acts as a 'Second Brain,' offering concise instructions and serving as a personal assistant for its users. I came across a headline asking where the women in AI are. It’s not the first time I’ve seen (or heard) this asked. The tech industry is seen as male-dominated because, well…it is. I’ve been in some pretty tough situations as a woman in tech – having my abilities and knowledge questioned based on the fact I’m a working mother. (Side note: why don’t we ever hear the term “working dad?”) But we’re breaking this mold. Women make up 45% of the FYLD team.  And, since we’re scattered across the world, it’s important to me as a leader to create connections. Our FYLD’Hers program is about building a community to learn and grow while empowering one another. On a quarterly basis, we gather together to: 👉 Collaborate on career development by hosting upskilling workshops 👉 Attend conferences and industry events – for example, we’re part of the Women’s Utility Network 👉 Create mentorship opportunities for those fresh in their careers to build up confidence and expertise 👉 Simply just being present together, helping each other navigate the challenges, and building relationships Here’s a photo from our latest FYLD’Hers event where we simply focused on community building.
