CORPORATE LAWYERS | MULTIPLE ROLES | MELBOURNE – While it’s fair to say the transactional legal recruitment market in Australia hasn’t been its usual self this year, there are some stand-out opportunities currently in Melbourne that might be worth considering. Here’s a snapshot of what’s on our books right now: M&A (7 to 12 yrs PQE) leading national mid-tier law firm with excellent partnership prospects Corporate with energy and resources sector focus (4 to 6 yrs PQE) major global law firm Corporate and commercial (2 to 5 yrs PQE) specialist boutique ECM (5 to 12 yrs PQE) short track to partnership for the right person, employer of choice mid-tier Partner Role (flexible about practice size, more about the person and fit) respected national mid-tier M&A (senior associate role 5 to 10 yrs PQE) top 10 law firm While many will wait to see what’s in store at this year’s pay review, largely it’s expected that those firms who are not currently hiring won’t be dishing out much. If you want to progress your career prospects in terms of promotion and remuneration, then perhaps some of these options might represent a career path rather than a holding pattern. As an Associate Director at BCL Legal, leading our London practice, I've seen the landscape for international lawyers seeking roles in the UK's bustling capital. Here's a distilled essence of strategies that can help you navigate this competitive market: 🔍 Research Thoroughly: Understand the legal market in London. It's dynamic, diverse, and highly competitive. Familiarize yourself with the key players, the prominent law firms, and the sectors that are thriving. 🌉 Bridge the Qualification Gap: Ensure your qualifications are recognized. For non-UK lawyers, this may involve taking the SQE to convert your qualification to a UK one. 🌐 Leverage Your Unique Perspective: Emphasize your international experience. London law firms value diverse perspectives that can navigate cross-border complexities. 🤝 Network, Network, Network: Build a robust network both online and offline. Attend legal events in London, join professional groups, and engage with the legal community on platforms like LinkedIn. 📝 Tailor Your CV: Highlight your relevant experience and adapt your CV to the UK market. 💼 Engage with Specialist Recruiters: Partner with recruiters who specialize in placing international lawyers in London. At BCL Legal, we understand the nuances of this transition and can provide tailored support. 🐾 Show Your Human Side: Don't be afraid to showcase your personality. My cocker spaniel often features in my conversations, reminding my network that behind the legal expertise, there's a person with passions and a life outside work. 📈 Stay Informed: Keep abreast of UK-specific legal developments and trends. Being knowledgeable about recent changes can give you an edge in interviews and networking conversations. Remember, securing a legal role in London is not just about your qualifications and experience; it's also about how well you can integrate into the legal community and contribute to the vibrant tapestry of London's legal sector. #LegalCareers #LondonLaw #InternationalLawyers

Ever wondered what General Counsels have on their hiring radar? I’ve put together 4 key aspects GCs often look for when building their legal teams: 1. Strategic Thinkers: GCs value professionals who go beyond legal expertise. They seek strategic thinkers who can align legal decisions with the overall business strategy. Demonstrating a holistic understanding of the company's goals is a game-changer. 2. Adaptability and Versatility: In a dynamic legal landscape, adaptability is paramount. GCs seek candidates who can navigate change with grace and versatility. Those who can pivot when needed and bring diverse skills to the table stand out. 3. Business Acumen: It's not just about knowing the law; it's about understanding the business. GCs appreciate candidates who grasp the broader commercial context, enabling them to provide legal advice that aligns with the company's objectives. 4. Effective Communicators: Communication is key in the legal realm. GCs value professionals who can distil complex legal matters into clear, actionable insights. Strong communicators foster collaboration and ensure legal nuances are understood across the organisation. Wanting to make an In-House move? 🚀 Hiring senior lawyers? Here's the inside track! 🧑⚖️✨ In my 38 years of legal recruitment, I've seen it all. But what really drives a firm to hire a senior lawyer? It's not just about the CVs, which I've perused by the thousands, or the prestige of their former firms. It's deeper. 1️⃣ **Experience that Speaks Volumes**: Senior lawyers are like vintage wine - their years in the field add a richness that can't be replicated. They bring a wealth of knowledge from handling complex cases and can navigate the legal landscape with finesse. 2️⃣ **Leadership with a Human Touch**: The best senior lawyers don't just lead; they inspire. They mentor juniors and shape the firm's culture. I've moved entire teams, and the transformational leadership they bring is palpable. 3️⃣ **Business Acumen**: They're not just legal experts; they're savvy business operators. Having visited every major UK law firm, I've witnessed how senior lawyers with a sharp business sense can significantly boost a firm's performance. 4️⃣ **Networks that Open Doors**: Their connections are invaluable. Whether it's a small town or a bustling city, the relationships they've built can lead to new opportunities and clients. 5️⃣ **Adaptability & Innovation**: The legal field is ever-evolving. Senior lawyers who stay abreast of changes and adapt strategies accordingly are worth their weight in gold. 6️⃣ **Negotiation Prowess**: As a former visiting professor of negotiation, I can attest that senior lawyers with exceptional negotiation skills can change the game for a firm, be it in settlements or business deals. 7️⃣ **Optimism & Resilience**: In this challenging profession, a positive outlook is key. Senior lawyers who maintain this can rally a team even in tough times. Hiring a senior lawyer is a strategic move. It's about adding a layer of depth, stability, and foresight to your firm. As someone who's counselled thousands of partners and been an expert witness in lawyers' earnings cases, I can say with certainty: the right senior lawyer doesn't just fill a role; they redefine it. 🔍 Looking to hire? Let's chat about finding that game-changing senior lawyer for your firm. #LegalRecruitment #SeniorLawyers #LawFirmLeadership
